My name is Nneka (Na-knee-ka) Renee. My first name is Nigerian and mother got it from a book she was reading. When I was about 19, I found out it was being pronounced incorrectly. It should be na-ka. It means mother the greatest. I've had a many of Nigerian women get upset with me about my name, as I am not Nigerian. Even with the explanation, there was still attitude. Finally had to say that I did not name myself.

Anyway, growing up I didn't like because everyone said it wrong. A lot of awards only show my middle name. As an adult, I love it!!

Wow!! I always thought parents picking names were simple but I see many of us have stories....some are REALLY funny.....anyway here goes!!

First there's TAMIKA (with an 'I' as I say each time I'm telling someone)......I hated my 1st name when I was younger b/c everyone always expected me to be some loud mouth ghetto girl (remember DMX "how's it going down"?? yeah early HS was the worst!!)…..eventually my mother told me the meaning behind it…..my parents met in Japan….I was named after my mother’s Japanese friend Tamiko…..my name actually means “people child”

Then there's SHANELLE.....some of you think your name is country.....my dad gave me that middle name b/c he liked a Chanel fragrance.....seriously daddy?!? He's country for doing that.....

To this day my mom refuses to call me one or the other....it's always Tamika Shanelle....UGH!!!!!

Last name TATUM.....Now I can deal with the names seperately but when u say my whole name together….it does sound a bit ghetto

My dad picked my first name because he had a life-long crush on Sophia Loren. My mother picked my middle name because Alexis was her favorite character from Dynasty.
