Henna For Gray Hair
I would like to use henna to color my hair but I have a few sections that are completely gray. Has any one ever used henna to color gray? I am a little nervous about trying it because my gray is so stubborn. I have premature gray at 37 runs in the family.
Re: Henna For Gray Hair
Girl, yes...Most of us on the 35 year old post - use henna. It turns the grey a auburnish color. I do mine every 2-3 weeks
Re: Henna For Gray Hair
Where do you get your henna from and what color do you use to achieve that color, I need some help I look older than I should because I have so much gray
Re: Henna For Gray Hair
I get mine from an Indian grocery store! Do a search on here for Indian grocery- You will find links to stores in your area. I just posted a pic of my hair on the 35 + thread. All the auburn you see is grey turned by henna- lol
Well maybe not ALLL!

I purchase my henna online from Butters-N-Bars http://butters-n-bars.com/henna4hair.html If you order from Butters-N-Bars, use the "curlynikki" code in the checkout for an additional 10% off your order as a Curly Nikki member.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I have used the Yemeni henna which is recommended for gray hair. I have also used the Jamila and it covered the gray pretty well also. I have the Rajasthani at home and will be trying that soon. You will probably need to add indigo if you want your hair to stay soft black or dark brown. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I am just learning about henna. I have a few gray strands, actually more than a few, and would like to try henna. Is henna safe to use on transitioning hair?

Re: Henna For Gray Hair
i found this some in the charleston area
PUJA Grocery
Address2110 Greenridge Rd A , North Charleston, SC, USA - United States of America, 29406Telephone843.569.7955
Nelli Grocery. 843-225-4111. Charleston,
I usually buy whatever they have in the store. The only difference in the hennas that I have tried is that some rinse out better than others.
Some of them will dye faster than others .
Some people will tell you - buy only Henna Brand A or Crop this!
The whole crop things - to me is a load of crap! I dont trust much coming out of the middle east especially after watching Good Hair- The people are told that they are donating their hair to GOD, when it reality it is coming over here to be placed on tracks or wigs!
For that reason alone, I dont trust that there is much difference in the crop. It has been my experience that HENNA is HENNA. Some of them rinse out good and some take a little longer. They all give my hair the same color. It doesn't affect how my hair feels. My hair feels the same after each treatment
Also remember this- you will need to Deep Condition (DC) after using henna, to avoid dryness!

Re: Henna For Gray Hair
Hi,
I was getting my eyebrows threaded today by an Indian lady, and I noticed she had red streaks in her hair, and I asked her what did she use, and she said henna. I then asked her where did she get it from, and she said the Indian grocery story in LR. I was like "Wow"! My confidence grew in thinking that I can just go up the interstate to get some henna.
You never know what you can find out until you ask!
Anyway, I am transitioning with twist braids, and I, too, have a lot of gray at 38. I thought that once I BC'd (hopefully in July, which will be around 28 weeks post relaxer), I could rock the TWA with my gray strands. I am confident that I want to do the chop, just not sure if I want to wear my gray out with the short hair.
All of this to say that I appreciate the sistahs who are laying down a slew of information for all of us..."Each one teach one"
Be blessed!

Body Art quality ("BAQ") henna is safe on all hair types as well as chemically treated hair. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Pinkpearls wrote:I am just learning about henna. Re: Henna For Gray Hair
Yes, I use henna to cover the grey as well (I'm about 30%) but also use indigo powder to make the hair a natural looking black. Henna by itself will turn grey hair ranging from orange to auburn, depending on the type henna and your hair. By doing a second treatment over that with indigo powder I get a browny black.

Henna to cover gray
I'm new to this site and I've been reading lots of great information about Henna. I've been natural for 3 years although I had to get my hair cut down to a tiny weenie afro to remove damaged portions of my hair as a result of getting my hair pressed at a salon which simply fried my hair. I've not put any pressing comb nor curling iron in my hair in almost a year. I've been washing and conditioning my hair on a weekly basis.
My main problem is that I have lots of gray over 50% especially at the crown and front part of my haid which is resistive to coloring. In the past I've wasted money on coloring jobs that didn't cover the gray too well but left my hair dry and brittle.
I found out about the Butters-N-Bars site last month on YouTube. I ordered Jamilla Henna and Organic Hibiscus Flowers. I mixed the henna with the drained liquid from the hibiscus flowers, ACV, a little honey and a dash of rosemary to a pudding consistency which resulted and a reddish brown colored mix. I covered it with plastic and let sit overnight. The next day I put the henna mix in my hair acording to the instructions, I covered my hair with plastic and tied it with a scarf. I rinse the henna very well the next day. I applied a deep conditioner; after rinsing my hair, the end portion whch was black from a previous hair dye was still black but the gray new growth was now a deep orange with reddish tint.
After reading all the comments on coloring gray hair posted on this site -I'm tempted on trying the Jamila Henna (100 gram) mixed with 1/3 cup cocoa. Will that cover the gray beter. I would like to get a dark brown/auburn color result. How many TNT of Henna is needed before I can expect to see a growth spurt in my hair? My current hair pattern is kinky and tighly coiled. I would also like to loosen the curl pattern for better curl formation. I'm exited about trying henna again - hopefully this time I'll get a better color result.
Appreciate any response. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Henna For Gray Hair
I mix mine with yogurt. I mix it up 12 hrs prior to applying. I apply - leave on 3-5 hrs and wash out!
Hope that helps

Re: Henna For Gray Hair
Nyla, your hair is beautiful! My henna order arrived last week and I'm still looking at it, too afraid to try. This henna thing has me so confused...I don't know what to mix it with. I spoke with the sales rep. and she recommended starting at the crown of my head and work my way around, making bantu knots. I guess I'll just try something and hope for the best.

Nyla, thanks for the reply. I'm going to order some Henna. Do you if there's any on sale or mail order with free shipping?

Re: Henna For Gray Hair
Most times, when purchasing henna, I go to my local Indian grocery. A new store just opened in my area, and they also sell cassia and amla. So, here is a website that shows locations in each state.
