Shower Filters: Kinky Hair Must Empty Shower Filters: Kinky Hair Must

Post by WarriorPrincess 13th February 2010, 10:59 pm

Long time no hear ladies:

I posted this over at the challenge thread but putting it here as well.

I have what I believe to be a very helpful tip (for those that are already on to this...I may be johnny come lately) for reducing dryness--hence retaining moisture, reducing breakage, and creating softness. That tip is a simple SHOWER FILTER. Working wonders on my fro! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

All week it's turned my otherwise dry fro --into a very soft moist one.
I noticed this difference by surprise the other day when I touched my
fro in the middle of the day at work and it felt like cotton. I had to
wash it before work and I let it air dry. Typically after it would dry
(even with conditioner and oils in it) it would feel dry and brittle.
NOT this time. Then I remembered the one thing that I did
differently...washed my hair with my new shower filter. I've since
co-washed three times this week with little to no change in the feel!

I bought the filter after over 3 hours of researching various brands
online. Don't believe the hype about the most expensive ones. I chose
the Sprite brand that you can pick up at home depot. Only $35. If you
are not on to this, I highly recommend you run out and get one and see
how your challenge results turn out. I think this with all the things
you ladies plan to do...will reduce breakage.

Here is apicture of my fro tonite. And this is 3 days worth of co-washing and oiling. Because I haven't had time to deep condition and protective style it. I've got so many compliments.

Feel like I need to be singing that intro from the Erykah Badu album--"you need to pick yo afro daaaaady...becawze it's flat on one side." [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Check it out...happy growing...

tootles!

I've definitely been considering getting a shower filter because Texas water is the WORST!!!! OMG...when I first moved here my face broke out soooo bad, and it also took a toll on my hair! Not terribly, but my hair felt super dry. Now it isn't so bad...I guess I've gotten used to it! But for the hair, I really need to invest in a shower filter! May need to put that on my weekend list of things to get!

the water in olywa (Olympia,Washington) is murder on everyone's hair. Seattle has better water, and i noticed the difference in the feel and texture of my hair, so a filter is definitely in order. mineral build up is literally NOT CUTE!!!!!!

Well I got ghetto water and it's hard to deal with. Bad plumbing to where sewage comes up in the toilet and fills my bathtube almost every other month. No telling what it's doing to my hair. I wish I could move but since I own it I can't afford to move and no one will rent a place like that.

I definitely have to get one of these for the house. My dorm water is fine but my water at home is HORRIBLE, its so hard. I can definitely tell a difference between the two when I wash my hair.

Tisha,
I am sooo glad you posted this. I've read about these several times and filter my drinking water, but since I've moved several times in the past 5 years for school and work, I've never quite felt like I could blame the water since climate and air pollution levels also changed. It's about time I try shower water filtration.
Thanks for this "A-ha!" moment!

I finally got the shower filter ($14) on sale at amazon.com! Yes!!! I noticed a difference after just two uses. The gunk comes out of my hair easier and my hair absorbs the moisture of the water almost instantly.

I love it. It was so cheap and easy to install. Maybe this will be the answer to why my hair still breaks like crazy.

I just purchased a new shower filter from Lowe's. I'm seeing a difference in my skin first. But I think the water flow is too strong, so I hope I don't get a larger water bill. As far as hair, now that I only do moisture products my hair has definitely turned around.

I'm so sorry. My notifications aren't going to my email so I don't know when people are posting to a comment.

Here's the link http://www.amazon.com/Culligan-WSH-C125-Wall-Mount-Capacity-Showerhead/dp/B0006VVN1S/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_b

It was on sale when I got it but $24 is still a good price.

I am so having to get one of these. There were so many that I had no idea which one to get. I will try the one you ladies are trying. This KS water is horrible on the ol' scalp. I live in a huge farming area and we filter the water due to agricultural runoff and I keep telling my dear hubby about a filter for the shower but he looks at me like I have 3 boobs or something.

Does anybody know what type of minerals are in a standard shower or sink?
And is all water from the shower and/or sink bad?

It depends on where you live. I did a quick search on your state and since all water is treatmented and recirculated if not from your own persona well. Regular sink water can contain saltwater, oil, grease, medicines, chlorine, floride, copper, lead....... and other goodies. Hence the need for water softners and filters.

I've been thinking about getting a shower filter for awhile. But I have a potentially silly question. Do i have to get rid of my hand held shower head to use one? I really like the versatility and easy of the hand held shower head especially when washing my hair but I don't know if the shower filter can be used with it.

Shower Filters: Kinky Hair Must Empty Re: Shower Filters: Kinky Hair Must

Shower filters help rid of some of the chemicals that are used in our water. It filters out chlorine, other minerals, dirt and other toxins. This is beneficial because it keeps these things from getting into our bodies. Chemicals are also known to irritate the skin (rashes, break outs, dry skin ect) and hair.

Without filters products are more likely to build up in your hair because of mineral deposits or products may not work correctly, or stop working over time because of chemical build up in your hair.

Those are just the things that I could think of off the top of my head. A quick google search will lend you more information about the benefits of shower filters.

ALL Texas water isn't bad. I'm from Houston and when I went to West Texas for law school, I immediately noticed a difference in the water. The water is horrible out here and my hair does so much better when I go back to Houston. I went to Home Depot and picked up a shower filter, but I haven't installed it yet! I need to get on that asap.
