I can't stop!!
I've been told that keeping your hands in your hair can have damaging effects--something about pulling the moisture from your hair?
I don't know how true or false this is, but at any rate I can NOT stop touching my curls. I mean it's BAD.
If what I've been told is true, what is it about having your hands in your hair that is so bad??

Re: I can't stop!!
I suffered from it really bad after the BC. Eventually you get better with it. I'm not sure what the effects are but I never suffered any damage. I imagine the manipulation may be harmful to the hair.

I am in the club too. I was just sitting here with my hands in hair when I read this post. I have yet to have any problems but the constant manipulation can cause some hair loss and split ends- resulting in more hair loss. So if you see some extra strands coming out, you might want to slow it down a bit.
Re: I can't stop!!
I'm almost 7 months natural (3/9/10) and I still love playing in my hair.

Whew! I'm so relieved to know that I'm not the only one!!
I can see where constant manipulation can be unhealthy, as some of you have mentioned. I'll try to get a handle on it.... LOL

Lol, I've enlisted my friends to yell at me when they catch me with my hands in my hair...that's proven to be ridiculously annoying, but it works...when they're around anyway* haha

Hi my name is Brittany and I have hands-in-hair syndrome!!
I actually had the same problem when I was relaxed and would always have my hands in my hair. But now that I'm natural ... it's 235% worse!!!!!! I twirl my curls ALL DAY!!! It's no joke and I'm not exaggerating. At all. I just love my curls what can I say?

HAHAHAHAHA!!! It's like my hands are magnetically drawn to these little spirally things that I just can't seem to stop fondling... I CAN NOT wait until my hair gets a little bit longer and I can actually stare at them instead of just touching!
Re: I can't stop!!
Brittany, I have always twirled my hair too! Relaxer or no... It's a terrible habit I picked up when I quit biting my nails. When I was 19, someone left me an anonymous news article that told of how twirling leads to hair loss. I was mad, LOL! But it's all good. No loss yet.
Thanks SweetDrk! I twist and twirl during conference calls too!

Re: I can't stop!!
I hope there's no charge for membership in this club. LOL Add me to the list of the touchy-feely. Primarily I'm squeezing the curls at the back of my head, near the nape of my neck. I've noticed that this is the healthiest section of my hair and the curls when I squeeze them are like perfect springy coils and bounce back when I squeeze them. It's a great feeling.
I hadn't realized how much I have been touching my hair until reading this thread. I do it at work, but it's not conscious. Just a nervous reflex I guess.

Re: I can't stop!!
I've had this problem since before going natural, before the 10 years of having a relaxer, back to the press-and-comb days under my granny's hot comb, lol.
I tell people it's comforting to pull at my hair, which it is, but one of my sorority sisters got me a bottle of Vitamin E oil to carry around, so whenever I catch myself pulling my edges or roots, I rub a little on my finger tips, so that I'm actually moisturizing my skin and hair.
My aunt also recommends keep your hair up in a bun or pony or to carry a paper clip to find something else to do with your hands and out of your head.

Re: I can't stop!!
Well....I guess I should jump in here as well. You would think since I have braids that I wouldn't have this problem right? Wrong.....I have my hands in my braids all day!!
Is there a 12 step program. You know like this...
Step 12...keep a paper clip in your hands
Step 11...keep a bottle of Vitamin E handy
Step 10...I need to get back to work...
ROTFL.....

Wow what a great idea!!! Cuz I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna stop touching my hair ... lol but at least I could be beneficial at the same time. Thanks LilyFlower for that suggestion!!!!!!!
Re: I can't stop!!
Hmm...paper clips and vitamin E, you say? That's a very clever idea!! I have some 7 Oils oil in a bottle--I think I'll start trying that* Natural hair can never have too much moisture!
Re: I can't stop!!
I'm having major problems with this today. I'm wearing my best twistout EVER today and my hair feels so soft and I'm just so pleased with it that I can't keep my hands out of it. I'm trying to resist though b/c I want to wear it like this tomorrow and I don't want it to frizz. It's hard to resist the curls!

Hi my name is Ty and I to have Hands in Hair Syndrome! After 21 months, I've given up on thinking I can quit and since I haven't yet had any issues with hair loss, I don't see the harm in it. I Love my curls and they Love me so we have an understanding [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Re: I can't stop!!
I'm with kinkynappyhappy there must be some sort of "HIH Anonymous" group that can help with this!
Today for the first time ever I wore my hair out in an afro. The new products i used left it feeling so soft! Now, not so much. Its feeling a bit dry particularly the left which is my HIH prefered side lol

Hmmm...so far you're the only person who's actually had any kind of dryness. I guess it's subjective-- another matter of that "listening to your hair" kind of thing, lol*
