Styling a short TWA (about 2 or 2 in a half inches)
Hey ladies!
I'm starting to fall in love with my natural look but I would like to change it up a bit! So far I've only been doing wash and go's and I've tried the EcoStyler gel to define my curls a little more. I've been looking on YouTube on styles for TWAs but it seems like a lot of those women have longer TWAs than mine. I know I could use accessories and such to style my TWA, but I am a dancer and in class and rehearsals we're not allowed to wear to many accessories in our hair (unless it is a part of costume). Therefore my options to accessorize are very slim! If any one could please help me it would be greatly appreciated! I love my TWA but I just want to change it up a bit!
Here's a pics of my hair now:

aduke1985,
You hair is so cute!
But I know that won't answer your question LOL
Have you tried coils? That's a nice style, actually protective style to try.
What about twists, or flat cornrows on the side to give a little different look and let the rest "be".
When I was your length I use to steal styling tips from MahoganyCurls, she is on naturallycurly(dot)com now but she also has a spot under "Curlfriends" you can reference on this forum.
I hope that helps!

Thanks kbelle for your response! I have tried coils but I didn't like the way they looked in the morning! lol and I actually did a twist out last night but it was really dry looking so next time I think I'll do it with my hair blown out instead of after I co-wash. I've tried braiding but my hair is so soft and curly it just curls right up! lol and come to find out my hair is longer than I thought it was! I was thinking it was about two inches but after I co-wash and was parting it to do the two strand twists I noticed it seemed longer, so I measured it (I've never measured my length before) and it's about 4 inches. So I'm guessing the gel causes a lot of shrinkage so with that being said I wanted to know what products I could use to stretch out my curls. I have Mizani's moisture stretch cream but it leaves a white residue every time I use it.
Today I tried 3 flat twists on both sides with a little gel and I used a kathy comb to pull it back a little more. I'll try to take a picture after it dries some!

how do u actually do a twist out on such short hair?? i find it hard to style my hair and it actuaklly looks like something when everything is all said and done. i too have a natural twa and it can get frustrating at times...good luck though

aduke1985 - yes, please post pictures, would love to see them!
Have you tried a satin cap before you go to bed? That might help hold the style a little. But if your hair texture is really soft then that may be why it's not holding much. Your hair texture really does sound like my daughter's and MahoganyCurl's. TWA's are so easy and carefree, so enjoy it!
Take care!

I wanted to say something supportive, but I wore my TWA plain Jane for almost a year. :lol I think maybe once I did a flat twist across the front for something different, but other than changing out various headbands, I couldn't do anything to my TWA that looked right...to me.
And to be even more negative (LOL) I'm at one year post BC and I'm still just wearing WNGs, in short, a mini afro. I have no styling skills and I'm learning to live with it.
Good luck to you, though. I bet you'll come up with something different and cute before too long.

I am with you about the coils. I have tried them and I don't like the way they look on me. I have about 4 inches on top and 2 1/2 on the sides. I have tried various styles; twist outs, roller set (with really small rods), I tried flat twist too, (but it came out really bad). I can't find anything that doesn't make my hair look lopsided and unkept.
I would do a puff but the back is soooo short; less than 2 inches. A headband looks wierd with the hair long at the top and super short at the back (2 inches plus shrinkage = zero). Therefore like Free2Be I am sticking with the WNGs.
I would really like to see the pics of your flat twists. I'm encouraged by others with TWA's that can do more than just a headband.

Cute curls! Have you tried flat twists? I used to do them when my twa was about 1.5 inch long. Here's some simple styles that I did. Hope this helps!

Indidiiamond: Idk how I did a twist out on my hair! lol It's actually longer in the middle and back and shorter on the sides! It took a lot of patience (took about 3 1/2 hrs) and I'm obssessed with things being neat so that was why it took me so long. But the next time I do it I think I will blow out my hair because when I took them out in the morning my hair was a little frizzy and the twist out wasn't as defined, but still cute!
Kbelle: I think my hair is really soft and although I wore a satin scarf it was still a little frizzy! Even as I was doing the twists on the sides my hair was curlying out of the style! But I'm happy it's soft because I <3 soft hair! lol And I do like the look of the TWA but I just like to change it up a bit, especially being a dancer we have a dress code at school (black leotard, pink or black tights) so I used to have fun with my hair to make me stand out a little. I still stand out because all of my teachers love my new look but I just like to play with different styles! lol but thanks! :-)
Free2be: thank you for your honesty! lol I do like the wash and go look but I don't like using gel everyday, I feel like it's bad for my hair! so that's why I want to get into different styles that require little or no gel because my WNG w/o gel is really frizzy! but thanks again!! :-D
Curlya: I feel the same way that's why I wanted to ask some ladies on Curlynikki for some ideas! But I've posted the pictures below; my sides are also shorter than my front and middle so I guess we're twinkies! lol
LaToya28: thanks for the pictures! your hair looks beautiful and it's something different I can try on the weekend when I'm not so busy! lol
rayray19: I def agree!! I love the fro-hawk look! I actually kind of got the look with my twists and kathy comb over the weekend but I'd like it to be a little bit fuller!
