Hairyuveda Challenge Empty Hairyuveda Challenge

Post by ButterQueen 30th May 2010, 3:15 pm

Good Evening Everyone!
Well this is my first attempt and I do not usually do challenges because I'm such a commitment phobe(lol)
So whats this one about...this past year has been so hectic since last baby who will officially be 1 on June 3 and business and the rest of my loving brood that my hair (other than actually being on my head, lol) has been the last thing on my mind.
However, Lately I have developed a renewed interest in Ayurvedics had the absolute pleasure of learning some new things from an Indian Man whose father specialises in 'herbal' (i.e. ayurvedic) medicine. It's a family affair for them and wow was he a wealth of info and I'm bubbling to share [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So I myself (because I always try out new things before I pass them on to my customers) decided that for the next 6 weeks (starting June1) I am going to do my first Hairyuveda Challenge. Going to focus on undoing the neglect of the past year and concentrate on using the ayurvedics to help grow (it did grow this year just not as much as previous years). My goal is to put on atleast 2 inches of growth which would stretch me past BSL in the back, I'm actually going to do a trim (and scissors is usually a four letter word for me but I'm going to do one for this challenge) and since I am running a sale on everything ayurveda thought it would be a nice challenge for you guys too.
So here's the kicker (don't throw rotten tomatoes at me okay [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] )
To use ONLY (or atleast mainly) ayurvedic products during this challeng. this includes everyones faves Henna, Amla, Brahmi, Shikakai, Aritha Powders . Amla, Brahmi, Shikakai Oils Some newbies to try are Maka or Bhringraj Powder and Oil and Jaswandi or Indian Red Hibiscus. Another Ayurvedic Oil is Navratna Oil and the last ones (the newbies ) are some potent ones for encouraging growth and helping hair loss and fall out. I actually just did an Amla/Jaswand deep condition yesterday and I will be posting a bit of a review.
We can be beautiful Naturally using Natural means (and you can be a all natural PJ too!)
I think this will be an enlightening challenge if anyone here is up...Holla Back [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Best wishes and as Nikki says "happy hair growing" ;-)
Sharika

Hairyuveda Challenge Empty Re: Hairyuveda Challenge

Post by ButterQueen 31st May 2010, 3:54 pm

Hi All!
Juice-N-Berries the goal is to use ayurvedic hair products such as the powders and oils, henna, even cassia and indigo for your coloring for your deep conditioning and maintenance. To try and give your hair a 'health break' and see how it can thrive using these completely natural products. As far as styling, do what you feel ;-)
So NubbieNatty that means you're good with you other challenges and if anything this will only enhance it ;-)
My first treatment consisted of a very simple deep condition (I did this yesterday b/c I was itching to see what the Jaswand would do for my hair-review coming today ;-)
The mix was:
50 grams of Jaswand/red hibiscus powder
100 grams of Amla Powder
about 1/4 c really raw honey
enough water to make this a paste

No lengthy release time is needed for this type of treatment but it is best to let it 'sit' for about 15 minutes. I applied in a similar fashion as henna, slapped on a heat cap and went about my day, lol, so I left this on atleast 5 hours.
I plan on doing 'pre-washes using the bhringraj oil and the Amla gold which both are two new products to my site.
I plan on doing a henna treatment hopefully twice during the challenge. I'm going back to my burgundy mix. My hair was 'cocoa brown' then I made the mistake of adding paprika to my cocoa mix and screwed my whole thing up, lol, so my hair was red with some weird brown undertones.
Use the products to focus on trouble areas of your hair whether it be something for growth, something for hair loss or fall outs, even scalp issues that may be hindering natural progress. AYURVEDA HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE (AND IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION JUST ASK ;-)
I will also post a list of powders, oils, and some sample uses for each or what each one is good for if that will be helpful.
I'm pumped about this one so let's get ready to rumble!

We can do a daily or weekly progress check see what everyone doing, and how everyone is doing, what you used and how you used it. I'd love to see everyone incorporate this challenge into their CSJ entries as well...just thrive and reap the benefits ;-)
OH, NubbieNatty, paprika will fire it up for you and remember repetition is the key. You can henna as often as you like and feel nothing but compliment to your regimine ;-)

ok so paprika...CHECK!! now how often do i need to henna. i know some folks do it every 4-6 wks or every 2-3 months but after the initial henna application, can i use the henna gloss in between?

and speakin of...(cuz im gettin the henna kit) am i applying the whole mix to my head or will i have some left over? and what do i do with the leftovers? is that what i can make my gloss with...leftovers?

yes, please break em down so i can take notes on the purpose n etc for each treatment [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I'd be down to try. I'm familiar with how to use oils and condition. But what are you going to use to wash and what about styling and daily care?

Post by ButterQueen 31st May 2010, 7:33 pm

Hi Juices!
now as far as that goes me personally only use shea butter and my aloe vera spritzer for styling and day to day. I don't use very many products and currently the only shampoo I use is my herbal shampoo(which contains some of these ayurvedics as well) (note when I say my own I literally mean it comes from B-N-B;-)
So though my focus is ayurveda if you have some other things you use for those purposes that's fine.
i do not use any product with anything
artificial in it and since I see you're striving to be chemical free this should be good for you! Minimal product usage means minimal to no buildup and some of the ayurvedic powders actually cleean the hair as well. For example shikakai and Aritha and Jaswand powders as well!
Let me know if you have questions,
Sharika

NubbieNatty,
you may have some paste leftover and you can just store it in the freezer until your ready to use it and yes you can definitely utilize it for a henna gloss!
I would love to start a journal, If I have the time I'll try to get one started ;-)

WOW...this is very interesting and very imtimidating challenging for me because I really don't know much about ayurvedics.

Right now I do a henna treatment once a month. I can really see the result of the color because I added hisbiscus powder to my BAQ henna mix as well as the conditioning benefits.

I'm curious about this challenge, and anything healthy is a go for me!! Today is June 1st so let me check out the other products so I can make sure I understand what I need to use and how to use it.

Thanks for posting...

Post by ChrsLvsBks 1st June 2010, 4:48 pm

I'm in, I'm in. Thanks for writing about it NubieNatty.

Thanks for the challenge BQ.

I did a treatment Saturday. I made a paste (consistency of thick mud) with kapoor kalchi (love the smell), amla, maka & brahmi using green tea. I applied it to freshly rinsed and cleansed hair [pre-pooed the night before with sesame oil, EVOO & coconut oil (refined)]. The mix was applied from tip to root. I let it sit on my hair for an hour under a plastic bag. Rinsed with warm water. Next time, I will co-wash after. Why? I still have traces of powders in my hair even after DC’ing and rinsing quite a bit.

I will make a tea from the herbs I currently have and use it in place of water in my spritzes. I will add Ayurvedic oils to my cleansers and conditioners. In addition, every week, I will do an Ayurvedic treatment, including henna.

From what I remember I have the following at home.

Maka oil
Navaranthi (sp?) oil
Vatika oil
Maka
Amla
Shikakai
Neem
Brahmi
Kalpi Tone
Kapoor kalchi

Any pointers on how to rid hair of particles?

I'm a little afraid of this challenge so I will be watching closely this time and taking notes. I know nothing about Ayurvedic products but natural always gets my PJism excited. I have a block of henna I purchased from Lush that I am afraid to use because it may turn my gray fire red. So I hav some learning and research to do. So I am sitting out this challenge but will be closely watching the thread.
BQ I also love your aloe vera spritzer that you mentioned. Can all of the Ayurvedic products mentioned be orderd from B-N-B?

My grays are a copper red. Since the henna also lightens my hair, it doesn't look all that bad to me. I have lots of grays along my forehead.

i think for those "intimidated" u can start off small. its actually not as hard or bad as u think. chrs has a good way of incorporating em into her reggie.

i pre-poo'd today with the shikakai n amla oil mix for an hour before i co-washed. i normally do my vatika coconut but it coated n softened pretty well. i gotta get the jasmine now!

Yesterday I ordered some Vatika Oil, Henna, and Cassia from the site. Had I known about this challenge, I would have sprung for some shikakai, amla, and brahmi. Perhaps I can check an Indian store. Houston is extremely diverse.

@Chrs thanks, I think I may give the henna a try in a few weeks, the pic helped a lot to give me a general idea of what to expect with my full frontal gray.

@ NubieNatty thanks I think I will try some easy stuff. The pre-poo with the oil is a good start since that's already a part of my reggie , thanks to ChrsLvsBks, and I already have the jasmine oil. I will check out the other products BQ suggested also.

Hairyuveda Challenge Empty Re: Hairyuveda Challenge

Post by ButterQueen 2nd June 2010, 4:29 pm

Hey All!
Okay so I'm doing my first round of 'burgundy mix' tomorrow and instead of my usual lemon juice I'll be using Amla powder in the mix.
There are so many different methods in terms of henna and what I have found is that if you have time to wait for dye release then your 'application' time or the time you have to don henna in your hair. For those who chose to mix and use then overnight is best and the heat from your body actually creates the 'dye release' while you sleep.
So basically waiting for dye release means you leave the henna on for around 2 hours instead of 12. If you don't like to wait for it to release beforehand that means you have to leave it 'on head' longer (and for me that stuff gets heavy after a while, lol)
Running a bit behind but i'll get the list and their uses up some time today!
HI CHRS!!! Happy you're here [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] and carfi...no worries the best thing about these products is that they are completely natural and if you have any specific questions you can always PM or email me.
So that's henna for me tomorrow...thanks so much EVERYONE!!

With some of the powders particularly shikakai, jaswand, maka, cassia or added to your henna, amla, brahmi, etc otherwise you may have those pesky flakes for a few days. I learned this the hard way thi first time I used shikakai and then again with cassia. In my pics I could see these gold flecks, lol, but I know now strain first! that I can think of right of the top can be made into a 'tea' , strained and then used as a rinse

Okay ladies I'm feeling a little bit more empowered after all the encouraging words, and reading info located on B-N-B "The Henna Place" I am ordering a henna bundle. Now I need help figuring out what Ayurvedic products I should purchase for my 4a hair that has a tendency to be dry and always thirsty. Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.

Hi Carfi,
as far as powders, Amla is always a winner and when adding it to your henna there is no need to add anything other than water (so thats a plus). You may also want to try using an oil as a pre-poo for added moisture. Amla gold is a newbie, but I love the smell (not as strong as jasmine oil) but it is also enriched with henna and almonds....just a little food for thought
Kinkynappyhappy-welcome aboard! I think this is going to be a great challenge and we're off to a 'banging' start here ;-)

Soooo... looks like I'm all the way in. I had to go to the Southwest side of town today where there's a heavy Indian population and I decided to stop at one of the stores. I picked up:

Brahmi Powder
Shikakai Powder
Amla Gold Oil (it does smell nice)
Reshma Henna
Mendhi Henna

Now I have some questions about the quality of the hennas I bought. Even though I've heard of the brands, I don't know what they look like so I just want to make sure mine is BAQ. I will post some pictures of it tonight.

Btw, I have no idea how to use any of this stuff or why, so any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Juices!
this is one benefit of waiting for dye release because when you check the released henna if it leaves a dark orangish t brown spot on your hand that doesnt readily fade you know you have BAQ henna even though I don't use them myself though I know these two popular brands to be of good quality (told you it smelled nice ;-)
