1 Month, 2 days!
The fun really begins once I hit the 2 month mark, as I typically relax my hair by that time. I've learned ALOT about hair care over the last month, and I'm really excited to get to the point where I can be 100% natural!

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
I am currently six weeks post and the "fun" has already begun for me. lol I usually relax my hair every four weeks so these last two have been a struggle. I tried to transition before and I made it to 8 weeks and punked out but not this time. I am so motivated and I even went out and bought a new deep conditioner that I read so good reviews on to help strenghten my hair and calm the urge to relax it. I've tried twisted bantu knot outs and I liked them alot when I was relaxed so I think that, along with a slicked back bun will be my staple transition style.
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
The last time I relaxed my hair was probably either mid-March or early-April. I'm really tired of having seemingly 'pretty /nice' hair that is also unhealthy and breaks so much.
Some new growth is showing and I always have my hair slicked back because honestly, I really don't know much abt styling. I know I'll have to get a new assembly of hair care products to make this transistion as 'smooth' as possible.
There is NO way I'm going to chop ALL of my hair off at once, so any style tips are helpful. I pray that I don't get tired of transitioning and revert AGAIN. My 1st attempt at going natural was in Decemeber, when I spoke to a new hairdresser(who did even more damage to my already breaking hair) she freaked me out by talking abt the Big Chop and weaves!
I have no intentions of adding any false hair to my own (no ofense to anyone), but I do need supprot in this time. Thanks Curly Nikki for making this sight available for my venting

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
Check out YouTube - there are ALOT of young ladies that have tutorials on how to do hair styles (and there are some for the transitioners). I totally understand your fear of the big chop. I almost did it myself this past Sunday, but as I started cutting away, I chickened out - so I just cut it real short. As my hair grows out I'll keep cutting away at the relaxed ends until I feel comfortable with the length (and the texture) and just let it all go. Until that happens, this is a good time to experiment, especially learning how to do twist outs and braid outs with your long hair, so that way you will be ready to tackle your hair in its natural state with ease. Good luck on your transition, I think you will have as much fun as I am :-)

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
Yes youtube helped me alot! I don't use it as much now because I've spent so much time on it in the past but if you need inspiration and tips Youtube is the place to go. They have videos on almost every natural/transitioning topic out there. Including products and hairtstyles. Just start out by searching "transitioning from relaxed to natural". That will lead you to pretty much everything else. I know how you feel because I started the first time in December and got frustrated with my hair almost 10 weeks into it. But i'm not going back this time. This forum has alot of ladies that can help you as well. And come on over to the Curly Teens section were ppl our age do alot of venting! lol
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
I just realized I am 7 weeks post today! I've only went this long without a relaxer once! I've been wearing my hair in a bun all week and it's really been easy. I think I'm going to do this most of the time until my new growth gets longer and less manageable. I plan on co washing it tonight and maybe doing a braidout. I miss letting my hair blow in the wind.
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
Well, I will officially be 1 month post relaxer tomorrow!! I really don't see much of a difference right now but I'm anxious to see what my texture will be like. I also appear to have "scab hair" so I'm doing what I can to keep it moisturized while I transition. I would like to transition the rest of the year and look into the BC in the Spring. Knowing me it may be sooner as I have extremely thick hair. I have about 1/2 inch around my edges since my last hairstylist let it sit there the longest. I have about 1/2 an inch at my crown and an inch in the back. I'm doing twist outs and I just did flexi rods last night. They came out cute for my first time! Two weeks from now will be the hardest time because that's when I usually get a relaxer so pray for me yall!!
Need help posting pics!! Until I figure this out I have pics of my hair on www.fotki.com/gettin-nappy, or on youtube under www.youtube.com/BeautifullyNapptural. Take care!!

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
I had that "scab hair" thing going on but the more it grows the softer it gets (at least for me). I don't know exactly how much new growth I have but I can see it more in the middle and the back. I really can't see any in the front, and that maybe because I used to pile relaxer on my edges to make sure they were straight. lol
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
Same here @Ebbz. I would tell them to let it sit on my edges and crown. That would expain the slow growth. I'm experimenting with different products but I find my trusty KeraCare Humecto Conditioner is still good to my hair along with the Olive Oil moisturizer. My problem is my habit of twisting my hair when I'm bored. I noticed it's breaking where I do that so I'm trying hard not to mess with my hair!

Hopefully this works. This is my hair after a flexi-rod and me not pinning the thickness down.

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
I tried to do a braid out but it did not come out good. and then it took me about 20 minutes to turn that into a pony tail. I need a new holding gel.
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
Have you tried pure aloe vera gel? It's pretty good at keeping my edges smooth.

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
No but I'll try it. Can i buy it at wal-mart? I'm in college so that's my store for everything! I just bought some Garnier-Fructis Leave in Conditioner from there that I'm gonna try tonight.
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
I didn't see any aloe vera gel at Walmart. I got it from Trader Joe's here in VA. I would go to a health food store and get it. Are you looking at something to hold your hair after your braid out? I haven't tried any holding sprays but I can look into it for you. I have Aphogee leave in conditioner but it just makes my hair hard. I'm looking into the transitioning kit by naturallycurly.

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
I just need something to slick my edges down for my ponytails and buns. I have the Aphogee Leave In too and lately it's been giving me the same results so I stopped using it. But we don't have a Trader Joe's here where I am, at least not near by and I would have to look up a health food store here.
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
Ok, the aloe vera gel will work great for slicking your edges down! You can also try EcoStyler with Olive Oil. I heard that words good too. I did some research and it shows 100% aloe vera gel by Fruit of the Earth is sold at Wal-mart, Target, Rite-Aid, Dollar store, and more. I would go to Wal-mart and see if they have it.

People...I am NOT from the US....*sniff sniff*
Most of the hair products are imported, and if they are not extremely popular, we're jus NOT getting them.
My roots are starting to look a bit messy, are there any seemingly popular stuffs I could look for?

Yes! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] The next time I go to wal mart I will look for some aloe vera gel! I know they sell Ecostyler in Sally's but I want to try the aloe vera gel first.
Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
@Alistar, you can try the EcoStyler gel or you can roller set it/twist out/braid out. It will hide the difference in the textures making it less noticeable.

@ Alistar - What exactly are you looking for and where are you looking? I agree with Ebbz to get Ecostyler if they sell it where you are. There are a lot of natural health stores in Trinidad. Hopefully they sell hair products also.

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
Can anyone suggest some good shampoos. I want to try Suave Humectant or a Garnier Fructis but I'm open to suggestions. (as longs as its in Wal-Mart or a BSS because I'm away at school right now)
It doesn't have to be sulfate free because I only wash my hair twice a month.

Re: 1 Month Post Relaxer
It's offical, I'm transitioning. I'm 4 weeks post and plan to transition over 12 months with mini chops. I've wanted to do this for over a year now. I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. I don't really have a Reggie yet. I just plan to do braidouts for ad long as I can and then I'll hid my hair in braids or sewins. Looking foward to sharing this journey with you ladies!
