Re: Castor Oil Challenge
I've been using castor oil on my edges for months now so I'm already a fan of it's growing power! I started this challenge back on the 1st to see how it would work if I used it all over. Here's my game plan:
What is your participation time frame: Feb 1 - March 31
What brand you will be using: Palma Christi Castor Oil
How will you or will you mix: 1/3 bottle of Castor Oil w/ 3 shots of Sweet Almond Oil
When and how will you apply: 3 times per week or as dry scalp dictates
What is your overall goal for this challenge: Healthier scalp & overall growth! My hair is already super thick so I'm going into this knowing that it's going to probably be an uncontrollable bushy!

Re: Castor Oil Challenge
A few participants have mentioned itching. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I have but it's not more itching than I normally experience. My package from Iherb.com came today [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] so I added a few drops of tea tree oil so hopefully it helps.

I got my first bottle from Walgreens in the laxative section. As long as nothing else is added you should be fine. Just check the ingredients
Re: Castor Oil Challenge
Today is going to be my first day starting the challenge...yayyy! So this evening I plan on shampooing my hair (haven't shampoo'd in a while, so I think its time!) & deep conditioning! I'll probably do a wash-n-go style or maybe the twist-n-curl...not sure yet. But my question is, should I apply the castor oil on my scalp before I put in the leave in? Or when should I apply it? I know a lot of people were saying that its pretty thick, and I've never used it, so I want to make sure Im doing it right, being that I will have a freshly washed head.

CocaColaCutie~
Is sunflower oil the same as sunflower seed oil? I'm looking sunflower seed oil to mix with castor oil for my skin.

Re: Castor Oil Challenge
I may have to extend my time frame, I won't know about growth because my BC is coming up.
Yes, I have experienced itching - I need some tea tree oil.

Re: Castor Oil Challenge
I'm joining the challenge. Yay!
*What is your participation time frame: Feb 6 to April 6
*What brand you will be using: Home Health, from my local health food store, about $5 for 8oz.
*How will you or will you mix: I mixed it with coconut oil in an empty Doo Gro bottle
*When and how will you apply: I applied it to my scalp, like grease and massaged it in, then ran straight coconut oil thru my ends. I plan to use it 3 times a week( Tues, Thur, Sat). Sat/Sun is my eash day
*What is your overall goal for this challenge: My goal is to lessen the shedding and breakage I have due to my previous perms and damage. I also, hope to acheive a nice transition of healthy hair, as i let the perm grow out, as i don't want to do a BC

@vivacious00: that fro in your avatar is gorgeous! Have you started a FOTKI album?
Re: Castor Oil Challenge
Thanks! That's actually my goal picture, as that was when my hair was all natural back in '08/'09. I haven't started a FOTKI, but i've been seeing others and think I will soon.

Castor oil can be pretty thick but I find that it absorbs quickly. You can apply it a couple of ways. Sometimes I squeeze a bit out on my finger tip & run it across my hairline. This will help control any dripping. Another way is to put it in a pointed-tip squeeze bottle & run the tip across your scalp. This is easiest if you have twists in & need to hit the parts. There's really no wrong way to do it.

Re: Castor Oil Challenge
@akaprincess00 Thanks so much for the advice girl! I applied it for the first time Friday night on my hair while it was wet, and did exactly how you just said. You're right, it is thick! LOL! I mixed it wih jojoba oil. I will say my hair turned out great! I was worried that it would be super greasy because i put it throughout my scalp too, but suprisingly it didn't! It was just right! So yes, it does absorb pretty quickly! Im really excited about the challenge now...i hope to see a lot of thickness & growth!

Great! I've been using castor oil for a few months now & I'm addicted to it. The more you use it, the more you'll love it!

Re: Castor Oil Challenge
After 1 week of applying castor oil (twice during the week) I co washed and I did not have the dry scalp! I love this stuff. I love it so much that I think I am going to up my application to three times a week. I will try it this week to see if it's too much and adjust if necessary.
Re: Castor Oil Challenge
I am gonna increase my applications to every other day and see how this works.

Re: Castor Oil Challenge
My JBCO arrived on Saturday and I used it today after I did my regimen from the 3 month growth challenge I am apart of also....lol...
I LOVE THESE CHALLENGES...because they really make me pay attention to what I do to my hair and noticing what works and what does not!...yay...
Organix coconut conditioner was used to prepoo along with the JBCO to deep conditioner. I sat under the dryer for no more than 10 minutes....I hate the heat!
After the dryer I rinsed everything out of my hair, I used a t shirt to wrap my hair to soak up the excess water. After this I massaged the castor oil into my hair "I was a little heavy handed" and this stuff is THICK! I even parted my hair and applied it to the sections of my hair.....I really didn't care...lol...I loved it and I have no one around to touch my hair anyway....IT'S ALL ME BABY!....lts all me baby!
Two strand twists and then white rods were left in all day....when I took them out my hair was nice and silky and the softest ever...
I used the JBCO and added rosemary essential oil...
