Being Natural in Highschool

Exactly!!I always wondered tht too!!Like why cant my own ppl be proud that there are ppl out there embracing their own natural hair?!!But nooo, i swear i get the dirtiest looks from black girls.Bt oohs and ahhs from white ones.it shames me.lol

the attention is great right?? lol when I wore a puff some people didn't like it but others loved it so I just took the nice comments and ignored the rest

i agree all the way.yu know whats really weird?When i wore straight weaves (only to make my hair grow), guys were all over.Wen i wear my own hair in its natural state, its like a totally different scene.

im only 15 :\ so theyre around tht age group.bt when i went to visit my bro. in college,i was getting head turns quite often.lol.i decided tht i cnt wait till college life.

not. lol. my ex was a clown and loved when i wore my hair curly and intentionally tried to make me feel insecure about myself

Well, I think there's a level of immaturity on the part of some guys but also a good level of ignorance. I mean if the guys mom didn't embrace her natural hair and broke it down with perms and weaves, the guy would probably grow up thinking that any hair that isn't "good hair" needs to be straightened. Siisii, u should learn to be confident in yourself despite how guys respond because confidence is sexy.

Thts one thing i have trouble with, Krissy.Its confidence.One of my biggest downfalls.For some odd reason, i could never embrace it There were many times friends of mine wuld try to get me to be confident, but it always failed. :\\I guess when i looked at how pretty other girls were compared to me, i felt hideous.Even if someone told me i was pretty, i still felt as if they were lying.*sighs*Its alot of emotions built up from freshman yr tht still carry on.

Hey hey now confidence isn't an instant thing. I mean improving the outside helps a lot but it takes a lot of internal work too. I read this memoir A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown a while ago and its basically about this unbelievable woman who overcame everything possible and became a successful lawyer. She came off drugs and alcohol and as she realized that she had massive insecurities that she had always drunk or smoked away. Anyways, to make a long story short, when she was recovering she had made literally thousands of sticky notes reminding her of everything that she needed to hear, including that she's beautiful because saying it once wasn't good enough. I think you should read the book because what that woman prevailed against is more than I ever thought possible.

My friends LOVE my hair while, others think that my hair is nappy or a bad hair day!

I've even had someone I didn't know tell me to get a PERM!

one time this guy with dreadlocks to his back (nice ones too!) whispered to his girlfriend: "she needs doctor miracle" apparently he was talking about me. yeah ppl that i dont know give me positive and negative feedback about my hair. either way im trying my best to maintain it

well, they're aren't many naturals that wear they're hair in its natural state. i can pretty much count all the naturals that i've seen / know that do. if there are more, they get their hair pressed. um, well i just recently BC'd in July, after school ended. (i'm a punk, i did that on purpose, lol.) but i've been with my friends a few times and most of them like it alot. no negative feedback, yet.

The only people that would have something to say are the black girls, and majority of my friends are brown. There are a few naturals in my school though, and many more who are straightened naturals.

I know I'm kind of late.. but anyway
I attend a school with about 900 students and in total we're 3(!!!) black people! Well it's cuz I live in Germany, but szill it's a very very low number. Anyway one is a guy and the other girl has bone straight hair and it's about BSL.
I remember one day my white friend was asking me: "Why don't you just wear you hair like hers?"
I must say I've had more negative responses about my hair than positive ones and it hasn't been easy for me at times but now I just say to myself: " I don't give a damn of what ppl think of my hair! As long as I love it and I'm happy with it, it's no one's business!"
I guess they don'T have any other choice but to accept me the way I.. but I sometimes think it's not their fault cause they don'T even understand the whole drama about black hair..!

How is it living in Germany? I was born there and lived there as a baby, and am able to get citizenship maybe. My family is Nigerian, and I have a German grandfather - so I've always been interested in visiting since I haven't been there in my teenage years. Just asking from the perspective of a black teen.

Well it depends on the area you would like to visit. There are quite a few blacks where I stay.. I guess the bigger the city, the more blacks! But it's definitely worth visiting! You should come to my area xD!

I'm not sure if I will get citizenship though, I already have Canadian and Nigerian, so I might have to get rid of Nigerian :/. What ethnic group are you?

Oh, and I may visit next summer though .

Oh, I'm Igbo. That's what my parents tell me too (about the citizenship).
I've never met a natural Nigerian teen either, but no one comments on my hair. They actually like it, lol.
