Being Natural in Highschool Empty Being Natural in Highschool

Post by Bun_Ana 3rd June 2010, 8:42 pm

I go to a pretty small school, about 900 students, and there are literally about 10 natural girls here. I'm known as the girl with the big curly hair Being Natural in Highschool Icon_rr (though I recently cut about 3-4 inches for the summer). Are there a lot of naturals at your school? How do people react to your hair?

Since I live in NYC, there definitely are plenty of curly heads out and aboot haha

People love my hair, although I'm sure people hate on me for it. They'd just rather look at me with a stank face (lol), instead of actually saying something Being Natural in Highschool Icon_rolleyes

In the Caribbean natural hair is no biggie. So i don't have much negative reactions. However many women still consider creamy crack to be their holy grail. In my class though many girls are BCing and transitioning....

I graduated from a H.S. with about 400 ppl so that is really really small! And I have been natuaral my whole life, but I always wore it in braids, twist, weaves, or wore it straight. When I decided to wear my hair in it's natural state (around February 2010) people were so positive! But there were occassional people in my class who had such rude remarks! they would say "Oyin when are u going to get your sasha fierce weave back?!?" or "Oyin... gurl your hair is a hott mess!" But being the calm person I am I just keep it moving cuz this is me and I'm not changing for any1:]

I live in california. My high school (I'm a sophomore)has about 600 students . Like most high schools we have our spirit weeks. On one day it was wakey hair day. At this time my hair was natural. There are a few guys at my school who have afros but i though it was time to show them up. My hair goes past my shoulders. I combed it out put some gell in it combed it out again and i had a 14inch diametered afro. every one(There mostly hispanics and asians at my school) was like wooow. This one asian chick was like can i touch it? Can I lose my pencil in it?? They were just amazed.

On a regular day when my hair looks like it does in my pictures no one really says anything

if its blow dryed or just combed out some of the asians ask me how did you tease your hair like that?

Then most of the time from the black girls they either give me nasty looks or ask me to do their hair like mine.

The guys have never said anything to me about it really

Well I'm not in high school anymore :'( Graduated this week actually but although I have gotten some negative responses from some people who just didn't like how I wear my hear (I usually have it in a curly fro with moisturizer not gel) I've learned to ignore the haters and just do me. A lot of people love my hair though and I love how it makes me stand out in a crowd.

@ afrochic: Yay you graduated too! Ignore those RUDE people because they don't know what they're talking about and your hair is lovely

aww thanks Smile

I want to cut it like your length actually because I have a texturizer in my hair right now and although there's nothing wrong with it I just like my natural hair better... SIgh, that's the last time I let my family tell me what "looks good"

I have been natural my whole life but i didnt start wearing my hair in it's natural state until Feb. 2010

I always wore my hair straight or in braids, weaves, twists and other stuff along those lines

my ma would never let me perm it as much as I begged!!

whatta smart mama!

I'm glad you love your natural hair though.. it breaks my heart to see "naturals" that always hide their hair in weaves and junk smh... Ugh I feel so unnatural because of this stupid texturizer! Sad

Really? The texturizer loosened my curls so the way my hair used to look wet is how it looks dry... but if i knew about henna I wouldn't have done it

n i guess ur right. its really not my place to judge

College IS completely different. Of course there are immature ppl where ever you go but for the most part...nobody really cares. College is such a mixture of different people, different styles and different cultures, it allows you to be whoever you want to be. I think finishing my freshman year really pushed me to start my transition. You learn alot about yourself in college and it helps you to pay more attention to what you don't like about yourself and qualities that you don't like in other people as well. It's just a learning experience in general but its a very freeing and liberating experience too.
