Please select the highest level of education completed. If you are currently pursuing a certain degree, check that level. If you are in high school, I would ask that you not vote as it would skew the result.

Natural Hair and Education Poll Empty Natural Hair and Education Poll

Post by Juices-n-Berries 16th April 2010, 8:33 pm

This thread is am offshoot of another thread where we were discussing whether or not there is a link between higher education and natural hair. Many people have observed a large number of naturals with higher level degrees. This poll was created in order to gain some insight to this using our very own Curly Nikki family as the sample group.

Please select the highest level of education completed. If you are currently pursuing a certain degree, check that level. If you are in high school, I would ask that you not vote as it would skew the result.

Hey JnB, is the poll anonymous? I wouldn't want anyone to be embarrassed if they think others can see their votes...not that this is anything to be embarrassed about, but just in case.

I voted by the way...can't wait to see the results.

This poll is anonymous. So, no one should feel embarrased to answer.

Hi Juices-n-Berries,

I noticed associates degree is not on the poll, can that be added?

I'm still transitioning, but I voted in the poll, if my vote will skew the results you can mentally subtract it. I have a Juris Doctorate (Law degree).

Oh no! I can't believe I forgot that. I knew I was missing something. Unfortunately, when I try to edit the post, it does not give me the option to edit the poll. The only thing I could do is start a new poll, which I don't mind doing if everyone is willing to re-vote.

I voted!! I love threads like these and I can not wait to see what is the end result. I have no problem in saying that even though I am a little late I am pursing my Bachelors Degree in Business Management online. I know I am 27 and it is later in my life, but better late than never is my motto. (plus I am trying to practice what I preach to my kids about education).

I feel the same way sometimes at 29, but 27 is not "later in your life." Getting an advanced education is great at any age. Congrats to you!

Oh, and I have an 18-year old in college, too! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I used to feel like it was hopeless for me at this age, and with paying for her education, too.

I really used to feel bad when my friends would say I have to finish before my daughter gets to college (haha) and I pressured myself, until I realized: if I take it step-by-step, and keep going, I will reach my goal.

But I am determined to get mine no matter how long it takes! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Hollis since you have two Associates which are usually two years each, go ahead n check Bachelors since that's 4 years. I'm really sorry again.

Ladies, I am 32 and after years( I'm talking 10 years) of trying different majors I finally settled to complete a B.A. in Child and Family Studies on line, On campus is not a option for me for many reasons after I finish Next year (yay) I plan on going straight into my Master's program for what I don't know. All I know is I want to teach Sp. Ed. and work with Autistic children, it seems like I am still trying to find myself *sigh*

I voted!

I am working towards 2 Bachelor's degrees, Child Development, and Early Childhood education. This totally happened by an accident of sorts, and since I'm almost finished with Child Development it was pointless to drop that major, so here I am. ^-^

I love this poll, the results are fascinating!

So, is thread topic implying that black women with natural hair are smarter than women with relaxed...? If so, that seems a little far-fetched and pretentious. Especially considering that many ladies on here only recently (like, within the last year) decided to BC. Just sayin'.

Anyways, I'm still in high school, but I plan to double major in Psychology and maybe Creative Writing (still dunno if that's right for me). I also plan to pursue my Masters. Don't worry, I didn't vote.

No, don't think so... I think people just want to see if there is some correlation between natural hair and education. But there are so many other factors to this: location, environment, finances, life experience, etc. These factors played more of a role in my decision to stay natural than my actual education, since 1) my natural hair was embraced by my mother, 2) relaxer maintenance and salon visits add up, and 3) as I've grown, I've learned to appreciate all of me sans changes. I'm sure these factors (and maybe others) influenced other women as well.
