Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
Okay I have been dabbling and debating with going natural for a few years now, but I always get a good inch of new growth and my hair dries out, and I get severe breakage all over my head. Therefore I always get frustrated and after about 1 or 2 months I end up buying my perming cream and relaxing my roots.
The same thing happened a couple weeks ago and I just did it again. I didn't leave the relaxer in for to long so my roots are not completely straight but they are manageable again. But I'm really bored with my hair I do nothing to it besides straighten it and cut my bangs every so often. Also my hair doesn't grow very well and I think it is because of my relaxers. It always grows to just below my ears and starts breaking off.
So what I what I want to know now is how to start up a routine so that when my roots begin growing back again they won't be so difficult to manage.

OMG!
I was just about to write a post on this until I read yours. I am struggling too. Not so much Im ready to relax...but my new growth is so freakin dry and my scalp is itching GA-LORE...(smh) I just washed my hair Friday and I feel like I need to just run water through it today because my scalp just feels so itchy and irritated. I am struggling so far transition. Plus I have a pixie cut so its not too much I can do to it. I could use some advice as well

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
My hair used to do that too, which is why I thought I needed to have it relaxed to deal with it. I've found conditioner (or co-) washing to be the best thing EVER for my hair. Also, when I was relaxed I'd wash my hair every two weeks (or three), since I've decided to transition I've been washing it at least once a week. Now that I'm not afraid of water (LOL) I also let my hair hair dry most of the time. If I do use a drier it's a cool one.
So my advice is to start treating all of your hair like it's natural instead of like you used to when you were relaxed. If you've never co-washed, I recommend V05 Strawberries n Cream Conditioner (that stuff is the bomb), it smells good, and it will get your hair clean. I also like Castor Oil for sealing in the moisture after washing.
I do know that the longer I'd stretch out relaxers, the faster my hair would grow, now that I'm done getting relaxers, my hair is having a growing party. LOL
So in a nutshell here's my advice:
1. Co-Wash, or at the very least stay AWAY from shampoos with sulfates in them.
2. Let your hair air dry
3. Find a good oil to seal with after washing
4. low manipulation hair styles are your friend
5. Deep Condition EVERY week once a week
6. NEVER comb your hair while it's completely dry, make sure it's at least damp (it doesn't have to be SOAKING wet, but if your hair is like mine, a comb won't win that battle, either the comb will break or your hair will, and we don't want either to break)
Also, Modelnik, you may want to try an Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse. Take some Apple Cider Vinegar and mix it with three times as much water. Then pour that on your scalp and let it sit for a while, you can massage it to make sure it gets in there good, then rinse it out and condition as usual.

@Muz Thank you!
I will try this tonight. Think I am going to go pick up some VO5 as well. I always hear about the ACV rinse but a little terrified of the though...but I think I can handle it...I just dont want my hair to drastically dry out...but I guess if I condition it after wards it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks again!

You can also use tea tree oil to help with the itching
oh and make sure your moisturizing products do not have any mineral oil, petroleum or anything like that.

Yeah...I pretty much threw out all my products with mineral oil...that's why Im having such a hard time figuring out why my scalp is so itchy. I have this all natural oil that acts as a scalp exilir and it will help for the moment...before I know it, it's itching again. Even though I washed and DC Friday...tonight Im going to do a ACV rinse and co-wash cause I cant take it. Plus Im having a hard time remembering not to scratch my scalp with my finger nails [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ...smh I'm just a mess. hehe

Maybe it is not all natural or you are allergic to something in it. What is the product?

If you're transitioning don't be afraid of the water! It helps!

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
So I just did a ACV rinse and co washed...boy o boy...my scalp feels much better. Hope it lasts. @Skluffy101 I am using Treasured Locks Hair and Scalp Elixir. Ingredients Shea Butter Oil, Refined Grade A Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Golden Jojoba Oil, Aloe Vera Oil, Unrefined Black Seed Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Essential Oils of Rosemary, Lavender and Premium Ylang Ylang, Vitamin E---I'm not allergic to any of this listed...I just think I needed to seriously clarify because after the acv rinse, condition..I used some of this on my scalp and it feels so much better.
@Paganwifey my hair and scalp is def enjoying the water.
Thanks Ladies.

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
Is it suggested that I let my hair air dry? My hair has a tendency to get really dry and frizz up when I try to do that.
What should I put in my hair after the co-wash?
Should I ever use shampoo?

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
Yes, you should let your hair air dry. As long as you don't touch it while you're drying it, it won't get frizzy. When I first started transitioning I'd put my hair in twists to dry like this:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Lately if I haven't styled it I've been banding it to stretch the new growth, your permed hair will dry straight for the most part. I don't know if you have enough new growth to worry about banding, so I suggest twists or plaits to air dry. If you are in a rush, you can sit under a cool or warm hooded dryer.
After co-washing you should put in your leave-in conditioner of choice. My favorite method for moisturizing after washing is this one from BlackOnyx77 on YouTube
I used the same products she did, except for the second leave-in, and for my cream based moisturizer I used ORS Olive Oil Moisturizing Cream. Oh, and I use Castor Oil now instead of Coconut Oil because I don't think Coconut Oil does anything for my hair.
And yes, you should shampoo when you feel the need to, if you have a lot of buildup or something like that, but I rarely shampoo, I don't think I've shampooed since 2009. LOL If you must use shampoo, try to use one that doesn't have any sulfates in it because that can dry your hair out. I did do an ACV rinse this week which was AWESOME, so you can also try that when your scalp feels dirty.

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
@Muz, how much new growth do you have in that picture with the bands? And what kind of style is it. When it dried, what style did you put it in. I would love to see the style afterwards.
Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
Here is my dilemma...I was deep into the transitioning stage I think I had about 9months worth of new growth (about 3-4inches)--all by wearing micros and kinky twist. I gave up on the whole thing and got a relaxer. Then I got sick and was not taking care of my hair and suffered some hair loss. So I am back on track and plan to GO NATURAL foreal this time but my hair cannot handle the micros and kinky twist--all of that pulling. I have very thin hair and would like some gentle hairstyles for transitioning. My last relaxer was March 20th, 2010...Suggestions?

Hi Msjnicole!
I am actually in the same boat as you. My last perm was at the beginning of March, so I'm almost at two months. I can't get braids and twists either for the same reason. When I get them, all they do is pull at my hair, and its just not with it. I have thin hair as well, so the transitioning is already tricky, and to add to that I'M TRANSITIONING FROM A SHORT HAIR CUT...so not good. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] But I'm gonna do it, and so are you! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Can anyone help us out?
Thanks a bunch!

So, I'm just now seeing this. LOL, sorry! I wasn't ignoring you. Umm, I think I had maybe 2-3 inches in that pic, and I think I ended up just wearing it in a twist-out. Yep, I did here's the pic:

I recommend twist-outs or braid outs with plaits instead of flat twists or cornrows so you don't have to pull your hair as much. You may also want to consider roller-sets. Maybe after your hair gets a little stronger try bantu-knot outs (you may be able to do them without pulling, but I know I always pull on mine). I also recommend using Castor Oil, a lot of people say that thickens their hair up. My hair has always been thick, but I've been using Castor Oil and my hair loves it
The great thing about twist/braid outs and bantu-knot outs is you can do them on any length of hair and they come out really cute.

well FidiBee and modelnik i have been transitioning for about 2 months and its been going somewhat smoothly. what i do is i shampoo my hair with a sulfate-free organic shampoo and use an organic reconstructor right after. those two products are both Giovanni and i ABSOLUTELY swear by them!! it smells great, works fantastic, and affordable too! i got mine at Walmart near the makeup section next where they keep the burt's bees line. i got them both for $7.95 each. the reconstructor allowed me to comb my hair with great slippage in the shower while it was still on. i also moisturize my ends each night and other areas as needed in the morning with palmers coconut oil. shea butter is also a must have for transitioners. Giovanni also has a leave in conditioner which i cant wait to get my hands on since i read excellent reviews on it on Amazon.com. does anyone else have any tips???

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
For itchy scalp, one day I got an ice cube, and rubbed it all over my scalp. It made it cold, and that calmed down the itching. I sealed with coconut oil, straight from the cooking aisle. I still have the itchies sometimes, so it wasn't a permanent fix, but the itchies aren't as bad now. I did this a couple times a week while the itching was still bad.
TOday I co washed with Trader Joe's tea tree tingling conditioner, and it seems also to help with itching. I washed with the T Joe's shampoo last week, and it is amazing also.
I wonder what causes the itching; I wonder if it the scalp saying 'time for a relaxer?' It seems that almost everyone who is working on giving up the relaxer has gone through this stage, until the scalp gets used to the fact that no relaxer is coming.

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
I just joined the forum today and I this topic totally sums up how I feel. I got my last relaxer in March and then gave up the creamy crack for good. I have been wearing sew-ins, which I actually like as it cuts down on some of the hair hassle especially since I like to work out. My problem now is where do I start??? Even with the sew-in I have been leaving the edges and some hair in the front out, and I don't know what to use or how to use it for that matter. I have been using Kinky Curly Knot Today, which my hair seems to like now and even when I was relaxing regularly. Any help, support, advice you can provide would be great. I am a total nubie so please break it down for me step by step as I am getting overwhelmed and lost.

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
I'm' sure other curlies will chime in. I've never had a sew in so i don't know what transitioning with one would be like. welcome!
for me, most week ends I wash, put conditioner in, comb with conditioner, rinse out conditioner. put oil on top to try to keep in water. have tried olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil. my hair likes all them, but the jojoba oil seems best for nto making acne on my face. braid hair in big cornrows, sometimes after it dries, sometimes before. go to sleep. wake up, put oil on hands, gently un braid, wear curly hair. wear it pulled back with band or clips, or just framing face. read way too long on Curly Nikki (called CN). that's what i've been doing.
some curlies skip shampoo and just use conditioner to wash, called a 'co wash'. conditioner only wash. i've done it twice, not sure if i'll do it again. i'm thinking of skipping braiding hair up, since i don't have time for it and it's getting harder with more natural hair. i do it to blend two textures and make htem look the same but now i'm ok with puffiness on top.
most nights i sleep wtih it in a bonnet or wrap or something, and re braid or put on curlers. i don't wanna risk tangling at night , knowing i'm not about to comb out tangles on dry hair in the morning. i've combed on dry hair before, and it makes it break off.
Things to do with hair: Be gentle with hair. Love it. Read other curlies advice on what good products are, adn on what ingredients to avoid in products. Work on styling hair without any heat, since humidity in summer will mess heat styles up, and heat might hurt your new curls. learn how your hair likes to be moisturized (with what and how often). i'm still working on this, but this week my hair has enjoyed me putting a mix of jojoba oil and water on new growth and scalp, and plain jojoba on ends. i didn't do this every day.
To do mentally: write a list of why you gave up the relaxer, so you are not tempted to go back when it starts getting harder to manage two textures. feel your scalp and relish not worrying about irritating it before the next relaxer. you can scratch adn sweat all you want without worrying that it will make it burn during relaxer!!! relish not feeling any scabs from relaxer burns. relish setting a good example for young girls around you; maybe you will encourage them to love their hair how it is, instead of change it. relaxer prevention!
to do inside body: drink more water, to keep new hair moisturized. i'm working on this. eat more vegetables that are good for hair; still researching this.

Re: Transitioning with NO IDEA where to start
also: Don't worry if at first you don't like your natural hair texture. it actually took me several months before i saw any real curliness in my hair texture; it took months for curly hair to grow. the stuff that grew before that was a fizzy mess, not relaxed, but not quite understanding that it was safe to be curly . Some people call it 'scab hair', the thought behind this name (I think) is that it's almost like the hair grew through a scab, like the relaxer hurt the follicle. then it heals slowly. hair that grows while it heals doesn't look as good. then natural hair that is really curly and pretty starts to grow, after scalp gets over the last relaxer.
not everyone experiences this, but some do. so don't worry, just keep watching it! hair textures change as they grow sometimes.
