Transitioning..but i want color...good or bad idea???

Post by janayc2534 on 15th February 2011, 1:49 pm

So I am transitioning. I haven't had a perm since September 2010. I am trying to grow my perm out and gradually cut it off. I have been contemplating color (not henna but permanent)...would this be a bad idea for a transitioner? I am in fear of breakage...I have come tooooo far Neutral

bad idea because your hair is already pretty fragile now that would be adding insult to injury

I think you should wait until all the relaxed hair is gone. I am a long term transitioner. My last relaxed was December 2009. I wanted color too but decided against it. I have had a couple of bad experiences with color when I was completely relaxed(breakage). Right now it is best to focus on working with the different textures and finding what works. How do you style your hair now that you are transitioning? Do you flat iron and use alot of heat.

I would say bad idea. That won't do anything but speed up your big chop...

@sheri I have been doing flat twist outs with no heat, air dry and lots of conditioning. that is about the only thing I kno how to do...i have tried the bantu knot out..didnt quite work out as planned. I think ill try it again.

Well you are on the right track with little or no heat. That is for sure. I have been using henna. It is not a dramatic color change on my dark brown hair. It gives my hair kinda like auburn shade which is mainly noticeable in the sunlight. I really like it because it had made my hair a lot stronger and with more shine. My hair seems more manageable too(easier to detangle after washing).

I had thought about using henna. I went to a indian store and bought a box also. The brand is called Naajo. After I bought it I searched the brand and could not find anyone who had used it before. The store did not sell Jamila that everyone raves about Sad but I am definately going to try my henna out. Its suppose to result in a reddish color. But on my hair it might turn out like a auburn color. (Cross fingers) I hope it works.

I never heard of that brand either. I first became interested in henna after reading about it on CN site. I just did my third henna this past weekend. Each time I used it I have used Jamila brand. The first time I bought some from local Indian store. It was ok but it was really hard to wash out. The last 2 times I purchased online Jamila summer 2010 crop. It cost $6 per 100 gm box vs the store here at $2 per box. To me it was worth it to spend the extra for better results. It washes out easier and my hair wasnt dry like the first time. I followe followed curly Nikki's instructions to a tee.

I saw her post and yes you are right. I know I would be guarunteed good results with Jamila so I should just get some. I think ill use Nikki's method also, its like a two in one system (color and deep conditioning).

Maybe you could try a strip of clip on colored hair. I absolutely love color, but will never take the plunge out of fear of ruining my hair. When boredom sets in or if I simply want to spice up a style, I'll opt for my curly clip on that I made (in one of my hair albums).

... just an idea...

Great advice given. Waiting is best. I've colored but it was 9 mos after my BC and my hair is healthy so no harm done.

Good luck with the henna. Let us know how it works out or post pics.
