Breakage vs new hairs

I have these hairs that are sprouting up on my crown area. It is anoing because they stick up when I twist my hair and do not lay down. How do I know if this is some type of breakage or new hairs?? I have only experience breakage when I wore my hair straightened so I cant really tell with my hair curly.

If you notice the little hairs right after you've used heat or had a rough detangling session, I'd say it's breakage, because I've had the same thing happen to me. That's why I'm laying off the heat for a while and any style that pulls and tugs at my hair.
