Re: Ask CurlyNikki
Thanks Nikki! I do shampoo, just with not any SLS so I may have have some build up. Will invest in a coco betaine poo instead though. SLS is harsher.

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
sls is super harsh. Try the coco (Giovanni 50/50 or Tea Tree is my fav) and if that doesn't do it, grab Suave's cheapie clarifying.

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
Yay! Question time!
I LOVE your TNC. I tried it once, but my hair did not feel well moisturized and because of my shrinkage I did not know how to maintain and get 3rd or 4th day hair. My avi pic is how it turned out. I could not pull it into a bun and I still have not invested in a satin pillowcase (i know!). Any suggestions?
My hair is nearly APL stretched but with shrinkage it's chin length. I tried a bun last week, but my hair did not seem to like it, it frizzed no matter what i did. Also any suggestions on bunning?
Thanks again Nikki, we really appreciate all you're doing for the naturally curly community [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
Hey Nikki. I need your expertise on this issue.
Even when I was relaxed, I have always had a problem with shedding and breakage. It's not half as bad since I went natural, but it still bothers me a little. I try to trim every 3-4 months, use heat only a few times a year, and have not experienced any dryness or damage that I'm aware of. Its hard for me to determine if this is really a problem because my hair has actually gotten thicker and a lot longer over the past year. I also notice that I only experience the breakage and shedding when my hair is wet. When I comb my hair dry, there's no breaking at all and very little shedding. I dont know what to think. Any ideas?

Intelligentbeauty, check out this link: https://curlynikki.forumotion.com/general-f3/how-to-post-a-picture-t310.htm
Terrad, you've got some crazy shrinkage!! APL?! That's long!! You might try a flexi rod or culformer set to stretch your hair out enough to pull it up into a messy or sleek bun. My hair gets very straight with both of these. It's a little more work than a twist-out, but the shrinkage is GREATLY reduced. You could also try the wet bunning...check out 'Videos' on the blog for instructions. It makes it super easy to get the hair sleek, and on top of your head Sorry the TnC isn't working out for you. The only way I know how to preserve it is sleeping with it out, or sleeping with it in a high pony.
@marche, I just read a thread about this somewhere...people debating whether or not some breakage/splitting is inevitable. My answer--definitely. Every time we style or manipulate our hair, we're putting stress on it...even though as naturals we're not over manipulating our hair, wear and tear still takes its toll, and weakend strands will break, snap, and pop from time to time. I definitely experience breakage occasionally--I don't worry about it because it's not localized to one area, and my hair isn't thinning any where. Like you, it's only getting fuller. Also remember, natural hair is very susceptible to damage--every bend on the strand is a place where the hair could potentially break. All we can do is our deep treatments, keep it properly moisturized and protected...and pray
If you find that you get more breakage wet than dry, maybe you should change up your routine (detangle while dry). Amel Larrieux (hair idol) only wets her hair once a month [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] While that routine wouldn't work for me, it clearly works for her!!! I believe someone posted her entire routine in the 'Hair Idol' post in the general board. You might try adapting her routine and seeing how your hair treats you

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
I know right! MY shrinkage is definitely crazy. A month ago this is where it was:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
But it springs right back up LOL. Thanks I will definitely keep working on it. I'm thinking about banding before bunning (that's sounds like a tongue twister). I will keep you posted.
Thanks again for the response.

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
Nikki...I'm having hair day blues gurly. I just washed my hair and clipped my ends. My hair is so thick at the roots from my new growth and then there is this straight intruder over powering my head. I put coconut oil in my hair and my "Qhemet Biologic" products just came in the 10 minutes ago. The Burdock Root Butter and the Olive & Honey Hydrating Balm. I put a little of the Root Butter on my hair and brushed it in real good. Girl it looks like I have a curly/straight fro. If you could see my hair now it looks like I've just come out a wind storm...lol. I tried the two strand twist before and they didn't come out that good. I'm wondering if it's because I have more straight hair than natural hair.
What are your view on two strand twist on straight hair?

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
I've never tried it, but read lots of forums where women who are relaxed or transitioning can only wear braid-outs...twist-outs fall flat on them, lose definition quickly, and look, well....blah.
Have you tried braid-outs? How about roller-sets?

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
Nikki, I have tried braid outs before. I was rocking that while on vacation in Jamaica a few months ago, but it was just ok. I tried the Heather Nicole Curly Fro, I saw your pics on the site and followed your steps and they didn't come out right. I'm wondering if my hair will come out better if I don it when its dry rather than wet. Maybe I will try to do it again.

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
@loveself247. This is a picture of my twist out when I was transitioning. At this time I was 5 months into my transition. I only remember this because on this day I found some Cole Haan shoes on sale for $33 at Belk and my bf was doing some MAJOR hating..LOL
P.S. it was created with flat twists

Something like this--
Flat Twist-out How To
What You'll Need:
-you
-list
-tools /products
-here
Step by Step Instructions
-
-
-
Pictures of the finished product and how the style helped you to transition!
Also, the link to a Youtube video that clearly shows how to do it--doesn't have to be your video! I think curlychronicles has one

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
@nmoultry...ok, so I'm sitting here watching "CurlyChronicles" aka. Autum on YouTube doing a flat twist out tutorial...but of course she has all natural hair...see, take a look below
part one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxnhNpowAi8&feature=related
Part two
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j59pIQWPdg&feature=related
not sure how this will look on my hair.
To achieve your style what do I need to do? My hair was washed today and it's dry and down right now. What steps/products should I use?

Re: Ask CurlyNikki
@nmoultry, because my ends are straight...they never stay twisted hanging down, so I have to pin them down and every time I take my hair down from even my Bantu Knots, I always have stringy ends.
That's it, I'm going for the scissors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
