Shingling Hair Empty Shingling Hair

Post by nmoultry 23rd October 2009, 5:05 pm

Does anyone know a really good product to use when shingling? Miss Jessie's products seem to be extremely heavy on my hair and I have to co-wash daily. I've also tried Hair Rules and Kinky Curly, I think I'm terrible when it comes to re-wetting the hair to activate the product

Shingling Hair Empty Shingling

Post by Serenity23 23rd October 2009, 6:19 pm

I recently tried shingling with Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue, but it left my hair hard and crunchy. So I'd be curious to know some other products that can be used for shingling?

I like to shingle using conditoner. Regular conditioner of my choice, since it is cold outside now, I use a heavier conditioner. Some people like to use conditioner and gel. When I shingle I like to make sure my hair is very wet, then I start the process. I feel that I save a lot of money using regular conditioner. But you can use any product of choice, I just say make sure it is water based. Just my opinion though. HTH!

Oh yeah, when I shingle with the conditoner, (my wash n' go) It last me about 7 days. All I do is reactivate the conditoner in the morning by spritzing it with water. When it dries, I do not touch my hair. At night, i sleep put my bonnet on, or sleep on my satin pillow. My hair is very flat in the morning, but I revive the curls in the morning with plain water. My BF does this method. You don't have to use the hair dryer of course, and my BF actually does it in the shower and lets the water touch her hair again after the process to avoid noodle hair (encourage more of a clumping effect).

@mahoganycurly, what would be an example of a conditioner that you use when shingling?

@serenity23, I have the same experience when I use any of MJ products to shingle my hair. I guess it doesn't agree with my hair because it always gets hard and crunchy after a few hours then its done by day 2 and I have to co-wash and do it all over again.

I had great success with Fantasia IC Gel when I used to shingle...just be sure to use a moisturizing leave-in under it. Many people have likened Fantasia to KCCC...give it a try!

I tried it with conditioner and some IC gel. I think I wasn't feeling the shape that my hair is. The back is longer than the sides so it was "interesting" to say the least. I tried to pin one side back with a flower and it was just ok. I'm gonna have to keep working on shingling as my hair grows.

I also shingle with Fantasia Ic gel..I use it liberally because I
actually want it to be hard. I shingled with conditioner in my hair.
There is no "shingling product" so to speak. You can do it with things
you use already. A gel you like , a moisturizer, or a conditioner. The
key is the process not the product. The raking or brushing through is
what shingles the hair. You have to avoid manipulating it until it's
dry for the best results. I'm going to upload my little shingling video
soon. I'll post here when I do.

Here are some pics in the mean time:

I shingled a bit with KCCC and it came out ok...(for what my lazy butt did) and then I changed over to EcoStyler which I like better.
