It really is great. Its motivation to keep going! I wish I could keep my hands out of it but I don't have the patience to put kinky twists in and my half wig gives me a headache if I wear it too long Sad

I saw some tutorials on youtube about scrunching relaxed hair....I tried it....didn't come out to good. I looked like a sick poodle. Yarn Braids (again)! - Page 2 Icon_neutral I ended up just brushing it into a wavy weird looking pony tail. Maybe I need more curling products. I only used Garnier Fructis Curl Shaping Spray and my gel, but the girls in the tutorials used at least 2 curling products. I'm just not comfortable with putting that much gel/mousse on my hair. AND it was the first time I've used heat since I started transitioning.

Oh Yeah....forgot to mention my new Conair Tourmaline Ceramic BlowDryer. It came with a comb, diffuser and concentrator and its RED! I wanted to buy a new flat iron, but I'm scared of heat damage and damaging my curl pattern so I didn't buy it. I don't remember the exact name but I know it was a Remington.

Hi Ebbz! I'm a newbie as well. Just had a question about your 1/2 wig. Does it have the clips on it, if not how does it stay secure??? What products are you using during your transition period, any tips??

My wig has a long comb in the front and a smaller comb in the back. The cap is pretty tight so I don't use any other pins or clips.

As far as products I'm using BB Oil Moisturizer with Castor Oil, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Leave In, Hawaiian Silky 14n1, Suave Humectant Conditioner, Lustrasilk Cholesterol with Shea Butter and Mango (for deep conditioning), Creme of Nature Kiwi and Citrus Shampoo, Africa's Best Herbal Oil and Smooth N Shine Gellation Gel with Aloe Vera (the clear one).

I would definitely recommend Suave conditioners (Suave Naturals, Humectant, and I heard Almond and Shea was really good), Garnier Fructis products, Lustrasilk Cholesterols and the BB Oil Moisturizer.

Co-washing helps me to detangle my new growth so I do that usually twice a week. I deep condition once a week to cut down on breakage because as your hair grows out, the line where the new growth and relaxed hair meet will become fragile and prone to breakage.

My hair and I have not been getting along lately. I need a protective style to keep me from playing with it. My half wig is too long to wear everyday in this heat and I don't want to put the kinky twists in it until the fall semester starts, which is the middle of august. If anyone has any other suggestions that will not cost me a lot of money please let me know.

I'm going to Myrtle Beach this weekend with my boyfriend for our anniversary and we are going to a water park. I don't have any idea what I should do with my hair before and after I go as far as styling and washing and conditioning it. I'm pretty sure chlorine will be in the water and I have no idea how it could possibly affect my hair.

You should try cornrowed braids, it should take long to do. You can get up and go with it, get wet in the pool and rinse the chlorine out!

I agree with CocoEuro. I would try cornrows and see how your hair does.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I will go with cornrows for the water park and I've decided to just put in a quick weave as a protective style next week and wear it for about 2 weeks. I will probably go with some really short curly hair since its so hot or one of those 27 steps. I've never done a 27 step before so I hope it turns out good if I decide to go with that.

A a former lifeguard the only thing that saved my hair was cornrows. I didn't like sitting for microbraids and cornrows were easy to take out and get redone on a regular basis. Just make sure you wet your hair before getting in and rinse you hair. I found rinsing with conditioner to help cut down on the dryness. Oh, and NEVER let your hair dry with chlorine/pool water in it.

@ Neems.....Thanks for the info. But letting it dry is going to be a problem because the beach is 2 hours away and we plan to be there all day and the water park is our first stop so I'm pretty sure that by the time I get home that night, my hair will be dry Sad

Oh, well if there is a shower at the waterpark you might want to rinse before you leave and head to the beach. Don't worry about it too much, just do a deep conditioning treatment when you get home.

Yarn Braids (again)! - Page 2 Empty Is this really my hair????

Post by Ebbz 30th June 2010, 10:15 pm

Last night I pre-pooed using my oil and Lustrasilk Cholesterol for about 45 minutes. I then washed my hair ONCE and conditioned and rinsed TWICE with Suave Humectant conditioner. I then used about a nickel size amount of the conditioner as a leave in , followed by Hawaiian Silky 14n1. I sectioned my hair off, applied a tiny bit of Africa's Best Herbal Oil to each section and bantu knotted my hair. I took my hair down this morning and WOW! Yarn Braids (again)! - Page 2 Icon_lol Yarn Braids (again)! - Page 2 Icon_lol Yarn Braids (again)! - Page 2 Icon_eek

My hair was extremely soft. It felt like the hair of my baby dolls from when was younger. I kept touching it (which made it frizzy), but I couldn't help it. I don't think my hair has ever been that soft I will definitely be using the Suave Humectant as not only a rinse out, but a leave in as well. As much as I like to try new products, I don't think I will be trying a new conditioner anytime soon. Since I have frizzed my hair up so much, I will be be doing the bantu knots again tonight on dry hair.

@Neems, hopefully there is a shower there. I want to be able to co wash my hair and put my half wig on for the rest of the day. But I'll make sure to post pictures for you all. (I will be buying batteries for my camera on the way there).

I miss CurlyNikki.....I haven't been able to post because the internet in my dorm is down Sad

The beach was fun! I will post a few pics later on today. I didn't have time to cornrow my hair so I just wore it in a ponytail in the water park and took it down and put a beanie on it for the rest of the day. I twisted my hair in mini twists yesterday for a quick protective style. I plan to leave them in until Saturday. I was surprised that they didn't unravel....I guess I made them small enough to hold themselves. All I used was Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Leave In and Africa's Best Herbal Oil, after I cowashed.

Thanks ladies!
@CocoEuro...I just started wearing them when I began my transition. They dress up my bad hair days and cover up my old knot outs/braid outs until I style my hair again. I only have two but I'm on the look out for some more.

My hair is still in twists so there is not too much to update.

I plan to take them down Thursday night (earlier than originally planned) since I will being going to the Comedy House in Columbia, SC to see Aries Spears Friday night. I will probably co-wash, deep condition and do a bantu knot out or a braid out. I just bought a spray bottle today as well so I will be using that in the future instead of washing my hair every time I want to wet it.

I received my free sample of Pantene's new shampoo and conditioner, dry to moisturized for curly hair. I will be trying that next week and I will let you know what I think of it.

In other news....final exams for summer school are tomorrow night and I am too excited! Summer school was too intense for me. lol Friday I will be heading home and officially begin my summer! Yarn Braids (again)! - Page 2 678474

I was originally attracted to the curlynikki forum because the diversity of women here and all of the knowledge and information the forum had to offer. I also saw it as an online support group, in order to be able to successfully embark on a natural hair journey.

Recently I have felt like most women on the forum that are 100% natural may discriminate against, ignore, or look around those of us on the forum that are not completely natural. We need support and encouragement just as much as anyone else. Its not easy to deal with two different textures, especially after being relaxed and it's not easy for everyone to just BC. I feel that most women have the opinion that its either BC or nothing. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I believe we should be more open-minded, more encouraging and more understanding of each other. The purpose should be to uplift each other. You can state your opinions on certain topics without trying to force your beliefs on other people.

I also feel like some women discriminate when it comes to age and using or not using the "curly girl method" or other methods as well. These things are discouraging and make me feel almost as if I am an outcast on this forum in certain areas. I will continue my journey to natural hair but I am not sure If I will continue to be a part of this forum.

Please note that this is just my personal experience/opinion. I did not do this to make any one feel any type of way or to draw attention to one person or group of people in particular. I am just stating how I feel because I may not be the only young transitioner, or transitioner in general, that feels this way.
