"Everyone can't go natural. It just doesn't work for everyone!" Empty "Everyone can't go natural. It just doesn't work for everyone!"

I attend FAU and since I've gone natural, it seems like everybody and their mama are going natural and I think it's great. Although I've received many, mainly positive comments about my hair, I've heard my fair share of ignorant comments as well, like "why are you going natural?" "Flat wraps on a woman are so much better". "Your hair will never lay, it will always be a fro." blah blah blah. But the most absolute worst is, "Natural hair doesn't look good on everyone. Natural hair fits you b/c it goes with your personality, but everyone can't just go natural". I just don't understand. Straight hair doesn't just grow out of our head. Everyone begins with natural, and then, if they choose, get a perm. And the worst is that the ignorant comments are from black men. And then when I said that my kids are going to be natural, they said, "Awww don't do that to your kids. They are gonna get picked on."

Is it true? Can everyone rock the natural look? Or does it only look good on certain people?

LOL! No, everyone cannot rock a natural look. Everyone can't rock a platinum fade. Everybody can't rock a perm. People say that everyone can't be natural or look good as a natural b/c its not the "norm". I mean seriously, its like asking can everyone rock their own skin tone. Just a ridiculous question all the way around. Don't worry about what they think. Do you. afro

I understand what you mean since we were all born this way why is it such a big deal to go back to our initial look why isn't our initial look the norm and the "perm" etc the odd look ? i wonder the same thing but i came to the conclusion that all the self hating issues the black race has been vicim of in history may be the reason why accepting one true self is such a big deal , out of all races of women we are the only ones who don't really know how to properly care for our hair and do not wear our on a majority i pray for this to end but i have to be honest and say if it took me 25 years to get the guts to transition than BC and being natural i can't expect others to accept me readily when it took me so long to process everything to myself

Its irritating. I get the whole "you can get away with it" in terms of my natural hair. Because my hair is thick, dense with defined curls, its OK. You're 4b with thin hair, you're screwed which pisses me off.

I know plenty of people who's perms and weaves does NOT work for them, but I don't say a word.

In terms of who can rock a natural look, IMO, it depends on the style. I know I would not like the way I look with a TWA, but that's how I feel about me.

I don't think the question is if everyone can rock the natural look, it is a particular style that they probably have a problem with. Natural hair can mean a lot of things: straight, twist out, afro, cornrows, braids, braid out, twa, wash and go...I do not think that every style is for everyone.

I don't think I look good with an afro, wash and go, braids, or cornrows. I think I look great with a twist out and soft waves (bantu knots on straightened hair).

Just like the Halle Berry cut won't work for everyone, curlier styles won't work for everyone regardless of how it naturally grows out of your head. Everything is not for everyone.

Another example: some people's eyebrows grow naturally bushy. They trim them and arch them to enhance their appearance (whatever that means to them). Should they not arch their brows because of the assumption thing are supposed to look better how they naturally grow. How about crooked teeth...should one not change them with braces because they want straight teeth...there are some people who rock a gap and crooked teeth without a problem (and it suits them well)...everything is not for everyone...

You can walk into a thrift shop and walk out looking like a million bucks. The style "fits your personality"...if another person wore that same outfit, they could look like they walked out of ...the thrift shop!!! Everything is not for everyone...

I kinda got off of subject, but hopefully you see where I am going...

I actually get tired of hearing the expression too. With so many different hair options how can you NOT want to go natural? When I was relaxed I had a wrap for the most part and I would wear this same boring style everyday with breakage and everything just to "fit in". When I first went natural everyone thought I was crazy and now the same people are asking me for advice now that my hair has grown tremendously.
