Split Ends
I feel silly asking this question but I really don't know what split ends look like on my natural hair. I've fully natural going on 2 years. I used to keep it cut short but I have been growing it since March and it is pretty thick. I two strand twisted yesterday and noticed that some of my twists have pieces that stick out. I don't know if this means that the ends or split or if this is a natural occurence.
I typically wear my fro out or in a puff. I manipulate very little. In fact the only time I use a comb is when I deep condition and detangle, usually once a week. Sometimes, but rarely, I stretch it to two weeks. Other wise I finger style. I really don't think there would be a reason for there to be breakage but again, I don't know what that looks like.
Thanks in advance,
Anz

Re: Split Ends
The pieces that stick out could be breakage or coils not wanting to participate! HA!! The way I tell if I have split ends is if I continue to get tangles.
Re: Split Ends
Hey anz30. Split ends look the same on any hair, relaxed or natural. The hairs you have sticking out could be split ends or it could just be that all your hair strands are not equal length. I have NEVER seen a braid or twist where some little strands don't stick out!!! lol
One way to tell if your ends are split/damages is to straighten your hair (flat iron, hot comb, whatever) if you run your hands down your hair and all you feel is smooth then you're good. But if you get to the ends and you start to feel that smoothness turn into a dry rough mess, then it's split!! Once the ends are tirmmed it'll all feel smooth again.
Another way to tell is if you try to curl your hair but the curls won't stay at the ends. Hope this helps!!

Re: Split Ends
This did help! Thank you both. I have noticed that my hands are not running through so smoothly anymore and my ends are drier and a little more scraggly than before. Sounds like it's time for a trim.
Thanks ladies
