Split Ends

Post by Ambitious_Tiff on 1st March 2011, 2:03 pm

Hey ladies! I'm just curious to know how you're supposed to check for split ends. A friend of mine was looking at my hair and she said I have them bad but I don't really see any. It just looks more to me like my strands are different lengths. How do y'all check? Do you pull strands out or just look at the hair while still attached? I just hope I am not missing anything. My hair seems to be growing some and I thought hair with split ends doesn't grow?

I'm curious what other ladies suggest but I just inspect my ends when conditioning.

I pull some strands (one at a time) from sections before I apply the conditioner and make sure there are no splits at the end. Because I can't look at every single strand of hair, I use this little test to gauge the overall health of my ends. If I find splits, I keep looking and clip as I go. If not, I celebrate and move on to the next step! I'll also inspect shed hairs, if there aren't too many to separate.

Hope that helps!

Ok, yeah that was another questions I had. Idk if I should do it right after I have washed or if that even matters. I just wouldn't want the hair to be like glued together with oil or whatever, lol. So when you check you only clip the ones that are split? How do you keep your hair even doing that? Never thought to check my shed hairs for splitting. Thanks girl!!

I think natural hatven ( I think) has a whole article on checking for damaged ends without heat.

Thank you Ashley! I did read her articles. My hair is in layers though so the braid method is not ideal. I also wonder how the fact that I am transitioning would play into that. scratch I haven't had a trim since October so it really hasn't been that long...

I don't know if it matters when you search for split ends but my tend to stand out more when my hair is dry. I still find them if its wet and coated with product tho'! I only check shed hairs to determine if I may need to check the "unshed" hairs.

I only clip the split ends because my hair isn't even anyway. My shortest hairs are APL and the longest past BSL, then there are all lengths in between. It doesn't look bad when it's all out...almost looks intentional!

Lol, I'm even for now. I wonder how long it'll be before I reach BSL... How often do you trim? I checked my shed hairs. They look fine to me...
