Do you use banana clips?
When I was transitioning, I would use banana clips all the time to achieve a curlhawk. But now that my hair is fully natural, I can't get the banana clip to even close in my hair because it's so thick.
Have any of you ever used banana clips, and how big were they?
I love the frohawk look, but regular bobby pins just don't cut it. I have to use like 12 of them on each side just to get my hair to stay back, even when I use Ecostyler gel. How do you style your frohawk and get it to hold?

Lol...well at least I know it's not just me. I sometimes need my husband's help to get my puffs the way I want them, so I know what you mean. The banana clip I have is probably about the same size as yours, but maybe I need to try finding a bigger one.
Thanks for your help!
Thanks for your help!
Re: Do you use banana clips?
I haven't used a banana clip because my hair isn't long enough, but when I put them in my daughter's hair, I put her hair in a ponytail first and then place the clip around that. Next I take out the ponytail holder and pin.

Re: Do you use banana clips?
I used to use banana clips all the time but I can't find any to fit my hair anymore. They're to too thin and fragile for my coarse and dense hair. where do purchase them from??
Re: Do you use banana clips?
I just bought a banana clip today to try a protective style inspired by kimmaytube. I'm washing my hair tonite and praying my hair is long enough for it to work. I think I will try it with the bump up front. I'll come back and let you know how it came out.

Re: Do you use banana clips?
*sigh* i love banana clips but my hair is entirely too thick to use without my hair being straightened, which whittles down the volume of my hair. i have broken many a banana clip what i find to help is the pony tail method that freckledmom described, but even then it still pops open on me, or breaks. usually i stuff as much hair as i can from the middle portion of my head into the clip, which leaves quiet a bit out off to the sides. from there i can bobby pin the rest upwards into the frohawk, whick IMO creates a better frohawk because i have more control in shaping it. bobby pins have never worked for me solo when creating a frohawk because the weight of my hair pushes the pins back downward. so this method is like a mold and then i do the rest of the work with the pins! HTH!
Re: Do you use banana clips?
@greenyourdecor really random, but your avi favors jilly from philly (jill scott) i think your gorge honey!! and i love your hair!
Re: Do you use banana clips?
The use of the banana clip..fail! Well let me rephrase that, the chunky flat twists down the sides of my head to the banana clip was the FAILED part! I didn't like the way it had turned out. I washed and DC last night and then put braids in my hair to go to sleep. Woke up this morning and attempted the style. Well when it was all said and done I ended up getting in the shower and rocking the puff to work today! I'll try it again, maybe this weekend when I have a little more time.

Re: Do you use banana clips?
Has anyone tried using 2 small/ medium sized banana clips? I know my hair is too thick and long (bsl stretched) for just one clip but I'd love to rock a curly fauxhawk and am thinking two clips may do the trick. That may be a crazy idea and a total flop but I'm trying to be creative...
Re: Do you use banana clips?
I use banana clips all the time, and i have a lot of hair. I admit when I bought them from the drug store they broke but I ordered the biggest size from kimmaytube's company Luv Naturals and they work just fine. I think they are the 7in ones...

This sounds like a really great method. I'll have to try it!
And thanks for the compliment! A lot of people have told me that about that photo. I'm flattered, because that chick is gorgeous! lol

I've considered trying this, because the clip I have is pretty small. I just never got around to buying another one. If you try it, let me know how it turns out. It doesn't sound like a bad idea, and it seems like it would be easier to get the frohawk to go all the way from the front of your head to the back instead of just being in the middle somewhere.

I am happy to know Roxie (my hair) isnt the only one that bends up hair/bobby pins and spits them out.

Re: Do you use banana clips?
@lynnieluv giiiiiirrrrllll you should see how stretched my hair makes bobby pins!! i even get the heavy duty large bobbys and they STILL can only take one use! its a shame. my mom had to start buying "unbreakable" combs a looooonnnnggg time ago. hmpf unbreakable my butt!. this thinkness aint no joke!
Re: Do you use banana clips?
I have really thick hair. I use the side combs for my hawks. They work like a charm.

Re: Do you use banana clips?
I just bought some more banana clips today, so I'll let you know how it turns out when I try using two of them at a time, along with bobby pins. I'm getting ready to try a caramel treatment for the first time.
Re: Do you use banana clips?
So I finally got around to using the banana clips for a fro-hawk. Like Derby diva, I used 2 banana clips in the middle of my head to hold as much hair as possible: one all the way at the back and one sort of in the front of my head, though I left big bangs out. Then I pinned the sides back with bobby pins. It took quite a few, but I love the resulting look. Today is day 3, and it has held up really well. I styled it on wet hair straight out of the shower.

Thanks Takeya! The clips were small, so I knew there was no way using just one would work. I'm really happy with the results

Since you have enough volume to cover the clips, perhaps you could use 4 clips (2 rows of 2). I have done this with side combs.
What you show in your pic looks great!

Re: Do you use banana clips?
I tried to use a banana clip yesterday. I had to ask my husband to clip it together at the top b/c it just wasn't working out for me. Well, he got it clipped shut and I was happy. That was short-lived b/c once I started messing with my hair to get it just right, the banana clip popped open and each peace flew to a different side of the room. I was so frustrated and he just laughed at me. I'm going to try it again though. Your results are great!
