too much straightening??? Empty too much straightening???

Post by pdolbabe 4th August 2010, 12:48 pm

I have been transitioning for a year. During that time I have been straightening my hair. I noticed that the top is not as curly as it probably should be.Some parts are straight. Is there anything I can do to correct my lack of curls?

My advice is to stop straightening. The sooner you do, hopefully the curls will resurface. I took too long so I'm waiting on my hair to grow back out. It also helps to encourage the curl by twisting or using rollers sans heat.

Thanks. I'll do that. I just moved to Houston. Any salon recommendations?

I was told that straightening your hair too much basically burns it just like flat irons. Thats why there are strands of really straight hair even when you wash. Like Cnicoles6 said, you'll have to put down the SC for a while or at least minimize its usage.

It sounds like you may have heat damage. Definitely step away from the flat iron/curling iron.

Do you guys think I need to do a weekly deep conditioning? If so, what do you recommend? I already know I can't do Aphogee. My hair hates it. It does better with a creamy condish...

I'm still searching for the perfect DC mix. I'm not sure what to use as a cream base other than pre-mixed conditioner. I've been thinking about trying to make my own with Mayo, EVOO, Cocnut oil, and something else but not sure what. I'm gonna do more research to find out what my mix is missing.

If you are protein sensitive, Jessicurl WDT is a great deep conditioner. I usually mix it with a little Coconut Oil, Jojoba, Argan and Vitamin E and sit under the steamer for 1 hour.

I've been to Unkle Funky's Daughter and I liked what they did to my hair. If you go to my Curl Street Journal you can see pictures. I've heard some good things about Natural Resources Salon and I think that's where I'll be going for my next trim.

Heat Damage can be a reason why many naturals choose not to use heat alot. While transitioning I used alot of heat for the first 7 months and after doing my BC had bad heat damage in the front. Im still cutting some of it off now, but its mostly gone, and Ive been 100% natural for a full year in this month...

Heat damage is permanent; I would suggest stop straightening to prevent more damage.

Definitely stop with the heat NOW. After reading some of the forums, it seems that eventually heat damaged ends will have to be trimmed off.
