Mixing Shea Butter
Hello,
A while ago I bought some lavender/vanilla scented shea butter from www.naturessheabutter.com. It smells heavenly and seems to be working. I just found out that a few places sell unrefined raw shea butter in my city but I would like to add a scent since I will be using it on my body and my face. Probably lavendar. Any other suggestions? Also, how do you mix it? Can someone let me know how to make the whipped shea butter or how to get it back to a solid after I mix it as well? Thanks! Sorry if this is a repost. I'm a newbie. Re: Mixing Shea Butter
Hey Joss I think lavendar is a good choice. I'm a lemon girl myself so I use lemon EO for my whipped shea butter. You'll find that when it comes to whipping shea butter people do it differently. I personally put my shea butter in a glass bowl and sit it over my hot pot that is filled with boiling water. A hotpot is basically just an electric kettle that boils water(back from my college days). After it softens up (NOT MELTS) I start mixing on a medium speed. It takes a good 15-20 minutes for it to get whipped to he consistency that I like it. I usually add coconut oil or almond oil as well and when its almost done I add the lemon essential oil. To get it back to a solid Id just stick it in the fridge. Hope that helps!
Re: Mixing Shea Butter
I whip it as is (I don't melt my shea butter) with coconut oil to soften it up, then add castor oil, a lighter oil like jojoba or hemp seed, and then add the essential oil (lavender, rosemary, or clary sage).
Re: Mixing Shea Butter
I soften up/melt my shea butter the same way as ALatina....I add castor oil, EVOO, coconut oil, a few drops of Vitamin E oil and a few drops of lemongrass. I put it in the fridge until it gets solid again....then I take it out and whip it with my hand mixer until it is a creamy consistency.

Hi,
This was a good question and I had a few more to add to yours:
Is this shea mixture for your scalp? Also once you whip shea butter does it stay that consistency?

I dont apply the mix to my scalp. Yes it stays that creamy consistency.

Re: Mixing Shea Butter
Thanks ladies! Question: If I don't have a hot pot, what can I use instead to melt it?

Re: Mixing Shea Butter
I will put water in a container and place in microwave for a minute on high. I then put shea butter (in smaller container) in the container with water.JossBella wrote:Thanks ladies! Question: If I don't have a hot pot, what can I use instead to melt it?
Re: Mixing Shea Butter
If you want a really whipped consistency I suggest you don't melt it. When you melt it and then whip it up it will melt down again easier. Room temperature shea butter is relatively easy to mix. I've done the melting/partially melting then refrigerating and it's really an extra step that isn't necessary at all.
Procedure:
Get your shea out
use a knife to cut it up into pieces
add your oils (sparingly or your mix will be too greasy)
then just whip it with your hand mixer or food processor whichever you prefer
use a rubber scraper to get it all into your container
It's really that simple. Save yourself time and skip the melt/refrigerate. Hope you like your results. Here is a video that I think is really great. The first one she does is a whipped consistency and the second one is more creamy.
