New trasitioner- twist-out question Empty New trasitioner- twist-out question

Post by CurlyChefRobin 12th May 2010, 10:43 am

Hello everyone!

I'm newly transitioning, 9 weeks since my last touch-up. I've been doing the twist out style for the past week or so and I have trouble keeping my sides looking nice on day two or three without re-twisting at night. I'm worried that this may be too much manipulation for my hair and it takes a little time. I do sleep in a satin cap but if I don't re-twist the sides get messy and straight. Any comments for those who use the twist-out style as well? Thank you curly ladies!

Do you sleep on your sides? If so, that is what is messing them up. I toss and turn all night so my twist outs are equally flat all over the next day, LOL. I just fluff and go. That is the good thing about natural hair - it is not supposed to be perfect

You can try pineappling your hair: putting your hair in a very high ponytail to sleep

Thanks so much. Yes I do sleep on my sides and right now my hair isn't long enough for the pineapple but I used your suggestion and just fluffled and went. I did twist the sides just a little before I went to bed, just enough to keep the curl. It looked good and I have to stop thinking it needs to look perfect. :-)

Thanks so much for your help!

Headbands, or a little gel on the sides works for me to lay them down. My hair is straight at the roots when I style it anyways, so if you're just looking to lay down fly away, the gel, or headbands should work.

You could also set your twists on perm rods. I did that during my long transition and this extended the curl longer than usual. I always did my TnCs with wet hair and preserved this style with bantu knots at night.

Thanks Hamptonsfnst - I have been doing the TnC method and it helps the transition a lot!
