Maintaining braid and twist-outs Empty Maintaining braid and twist-outs

Post by toyjewell 11th May 2010, 4:16 pm

Hello ladies! I am really beginning to get the hang of braiding my hair to the scalp and wearing them out. BUT finding that in order to look presentable the next day I have to rebraid EVERY night. I am actually getting use to it but wondering if I am missing something. And is it good for my hair to be tugging at it every night??

I wonder the same thing. I re-braided my hair last night, and thought that my roots don't get to relax at night!

Tonight I'm just rolling it with soft foam rollers, without re-braiding, to see if it still looks nice tomorrow.

I use a little light hold styling foam on the first day I braid and it lasts me all week. And at night I do a loose high ponytail with a satin bonnet

I have been transitioning for 8 mths. I have tried a twist out several
times and do not get the awesome results I have seen on CN wonderful
blog! I do Bandu Knot outs with much success...am I doing something
wrong? Is this not an good transitional style option? I am also new to
the forum. Thank you in advance for your help ladies!

Are you styling on wet, damp, or dry hair? If you aren't already I suggest doing the initial styling on damp (not dripping/soaking wet hair unless you have time for it to dry completely before you take it down) hair so it will hold better/longer. Also, the smaller you do whatever it is you're doing the longer it will last because the curls will be tighter. When you do looser curls they are harder to maintain Smile

Muz I was doing both on dry and damp hair, but doing it late and taking it down the next morning not allow much time to "set". So I am on day 3 of a flat twist out and I haven't had to retwist at night. I used Nik's suggested method of Yes to Cucumber and Aveda's Elemen Designing Whip. I love the result!

NubbieNaturalNik can you tell me more about how you do your bantu knots?

Sure toyjewell! I usually do my set on Sunday. After I co-wash with Herbal Essence Hello Hydration, I deep condition with Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk Conditioner. Then I section my hair into 6 sections. I start with the front so that it can really set well. I usually end up parting a section into about 9-10 bantu Knots. My hair is thick so It may end up being a little more. I probably end up with a total of 50-60 knots. I make my knots smaller because it seems to hold better (I have a lot of relaxer still on my ends). I have been experimenting with lots of products to set it. It is not perfected yet. I started off with using Miss Jessies Curly Pudding and Buttercream but it is so expensive that I am in search of subsitutions. Can't figure out how to upload pics. If you all can tell me how to do that I will post pics. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
