Comical reactions to your hair? Empty Comical reactions to your hair?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Today was my first day really “wearing” a transition style out (straw set), and here we go. I’d forgotten what attention you can get sometimes (this will be my second time natural).

I just bought a headband with a big old flower on it and was rocking it at the supermarket. The guy behind me (white) said he liked my hair… that I looked like Tracey Chapman “except her dreads are longer”. He said I could rock the look because my outfit was rocking, and I looked like I was going to start a revolution.

Then his girl said she thought I looked more like Corinne Bailey Ray, and could imagine me riding a bicycle….

Yeah, compliments, because their beautiful, talented women…. But I don’t look like them. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The cashier said he liked my flower when he handed me my change, and the other guy yelled “Bye Tracey” as I left the store. Hilarious.

Have you have any funny reactions to your hair/look?

Hehehe. You have to laugh. They normally have good intentions, they just don't know how to express it.

A few years ago I worked with this older black lady that had a jherry curl. Everyday she would stare at my hair, but not really say anything. Finally one day she turns to me and says "So what is that? Is it some kind of process?" I'm like "excuse me?" (b/c she just came out of nowhere with it). So she says "Your hair, is there some kind of process in it?". I laughed and said "Are you asking me if I have a jherry curl or something?" And she says "yeah, how else would you get it so curly?". I busted out laughing and was said "Its naturally curly!". She couldn't understand why I was laughing and just looked at me kind of strange. After that, she never said anything about my hair again. It was so funny to me b/c that was the first time anyone asked me something like that and I've been natural my whole life.

Bajan--

I don't know why, but all of the stories about Jheri curls always make me laugh uncontrollably. I'm sitting in a conference room across from my manager (less than 3 feet away) about to lose it. Thanks for the laugh and brightening my day! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Oh, one of my co-workers presented me with the "most versatile hair" award one day at work. I'd come in with a fresh Dominican blowout and the hair was whippin! She asked if I had on a wig, got closer and asked if they were extensions, THEN asked to run her hands through it.

p.s. I'm still laughing at the Jheri curl...

I was called Corinne Bailey Rae and I LOVE HER and think she's beautiful so I took it as a compliment. But I think the reason is that most people only know of a few natural women that are famous or in the spotlight, even though we all know that there are so many more than are shown. So I think people say we look like the first natural lady that pops into their heads because it's easy association or something like that ... lol Idk but its pretty funny to me [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It's funny to me too. It's all new to me, because this is the first time in my transition that I'm wearing my hair out semi-natural in a long time.

Yesterday I had a lady walk up behind me and put her hands in my hair, fingers to the scalp, and started massaging--telling me she liked my hair. Before I could turn to see who it was (a friend of mine) I got all "black-woman don't touch my hair!" She apologized, and I felt bad. Just kind of surprised me to all of a sudden have a random hand in my head.

Yeah, who am I kidding...knowing it was a friend I still would have been like "Why is you hand in my head without asking?" Boundaries people! LOL

Yeah, I'm with SisterBoyd...we'da (is that a word?) been fighting! LOL

Yesterday, I had the serious afro puff (it's getting thicker and puffier--I'm lovin' it). I'm walking down the hall at work and I hear people talking behind me, but I don't turn around. As I round the corner, I hear someone say "Hey PomPom". So, I stop and stick my head back around the corner because I JUST KNEW THEY WERE TALKING TO ME . . . and they were! LOL It was my buddy...she'd been trying to get my attention for a minute...but I didn't answer to my own name, yet I responded to PomPom! We got a good laugh out of that.

My sister says my twists look like rotini pasta.
My brother calls me Angie Stone, Jill Scott, Macy Gray, Tego Calderon, India Arie.....
My grandmother asked how I got my hair so wrinkly.

That sounds like something a grandma would say! Mine always has something crazy to say about my hair. When I saw her during the holidays I was wearing a puff (similar to the one in my avatar) and she thought it was a phonytail! She was like "what is that, a piece?"

Post by ~JOME~ 12th February 2010, 8:19 pm

My older weavalicious diva half-sister ( I luv her, lol) came by to visit my family recently and this was the first time that she seen my hair out since I started my transition. When my hair was relaxed, she would always get on my case because it was longer than hers and my lil sis's hair so she would jokingly say "I hate your hair, heifer" or "You got yo hair from your mama". So when she saw my 2 day old twistout, she ran her hand thru my hair and said, "I like your bob". Mind you, I did not cut my hair. The shrinkage of my new growth caused my hair to be shorter than it actually is. All I could do was laugh at her comment.
