Transitioning w/ Micro Braids Empty Transitioning w/ Micro Braids

Post by NewlyNatural 1st November 2009, 4:30 pm

I just went natural, October 30, and I did the BIG CHOP so I have a mini afro and in three weeks I plan on putting micro braids in until I grow it out to a desired length. However until then I wanted to know, besides co-washing, what should I do so that my hair wouldn't be as dry and coarse?

Congratulations on the BC! I just wanted say, make sure to be careful of the edges! My edges got really thin and broke the last time I had braids and its been a pain getting them to grow back in...keep the edges especially moisturized and dont pull the braids too tight....

What I find to help my hair stay moisturized is co-wash , leave in a good conditioner for added moisture, and seal with oil. Re-moisturize daily (as needed) and drink lots of water!

Its also good to deep condition at least once a week...

Do you blow dry or air dry after washing?

I do everything CuteP said and I air dry. I have a 2mth old TWA and I love it!

I use M-Curls method of co-wash/shingle and revive with water each morning. I can usually go 4 to 5 days without adding more product.

Congrats on your BC!!

@Sweetdrk1....beautiful! Mahoganycurls has 3c/b hair, is that what you have as well? If so, do you think the same results will be achieved with 4a hair?

Transitioning w/ Micro Braids Empty Re: Transitioning w/ Micro Braids

Post by beAutiFul.jOuRnee 12th November 2009, 5:00 pm

Hey y'all! I'm also new to the natural lifestyle and I've been using micro braids to transition also. I absolutely LOVE micros because they last long and they're attainable. My hair has never broken off with them either. My last perm was in April and I got micros in May. I kept them in until August lol...there was A LOT of new growth. It was enough for me to cut off my permed hair! i had about 2.5 inches of natural hair. A few days later I got micros again and I just took them out about a month ago then I got micros AGAIN!! so now my natural hair is a total of 5 inches!! I'm really excited. What helped me reach this point is:
1. I moisturized my braids constantly. Mainly with olive oil spray, on average 2 times a day. Thats the key point. Never let your hair get dry or else your edges will break and your hair will shed.
2. After about a month or so, I started to wash my hair every week with all natural products.
3. I always let my hair air dry...I havent used heat since March. I don't even own a flat iron anymore.
4. Lastly, I drink lots of water and take Multivitamins and Hair, Nails and skin vitamins from trader joe's!

There you go! I hope this helps! After I take these braids out, I hope to get a sew in so my hair can grow more
