I usually only mix my henna with warm coconut milk and then add a lil honey right before application. This time I want to add a couple of tbs of amla to counteract curl loosening. When do I add it? Before or after dye release?

I believe you can add it before or after the dye release. It has acid in it so some add it to the henna and mix with water (no other acid is used). Check out this thread.

Hi Craving, You can mix the Amla up in a separate bowl and add it to the henna before dye release if that is the only acidic property you're using. If the coconut milk is acidic, you can add the Amla to your henna after dye release. For my mixtures, I only use Amla as my acidic property and I mix it before dye release.

Since you get a 2 for 1 deal as amla is a mild acid and assists with curl retention, you can put it in with the henna and then add your liquid and allow the dye to release. No other worries about an acidic liquid. I use it for curl retention as well.
