How long before you BC'd?
Salve!
As I mentioned I have been long term transitioning for 16 months now my hair has grew out quite a bit! I have very thick hair and my trans. styles have been twist out lately and roller sets. My only problem is I've found that my relaxed are killing the overall look of my styles. SOOOOO I've decided that its time to get rid of them. I'm just worried that after going through with it I might have more shrinkage than I thought and my hair might not fit my head.
I'm probably over thinking this all (I know I am actually) but any words of encouragment would be greatly appreicated!!!!

I say go for it! I don't know how you've kept up with transitioning for that long. But yes you are waaaay overdue to get rid of the relaxed hair. I'm coming up on 5 months the end of this week and I had to cut off the relaxed hair because it started to get stringy. Go ahead and do it girl! I plan to cut the rest of my relaxed ends off soon myself. It'll be easier for you to manage you styles as well.

Wow! Congratulations for making it 16 months! I'm sure you'll be fine. 16 months of new growth should be plenty for you to rock. How many inches of relaxed hair would be cutting off?

I say go for it. Transitioning longer will not change how much shrinkage you have. And you hair will fit your head. I know it will be beautiful!! Congratulations on making 16 months. I BC'd after 4 months of transitioning.

I know how you feel. I have been transitioning for two years. Although I am completely natural in the back section of my head. I cannot bring myself to cut the remaining relaxed ends in the front. LOL. Oh well. They'll get cut eventually with trims.

I know how you feel! I'll be at 16 months next week, and my big chop is next weekend. Shrinkage can be crazy, but I'm planning on trying my best to wear stretched styles. Things like braidouts and curlformers can help with not having much shrinkage.

I cut my relaxed ends after 16 months. I just got tired of looking at them plus my natural hair over powered my relaxed hair. If you are ready to cut it then cut it, if not then wait.

@naturallyu: We are in the same boat almost! The back of my head is natural too but the front is just to scary to think about!! it's like I want to get it over with because of the overall look of my hair AND I know it'll grow that much faster once I get of them but again THOSE DAMN DIRTY SCISSORS!!! lol

The back of my hair is completely natural as well, and I said above that I'm 16 months post. One thing I DID notice yesterday though, is that the back of my hair has been growing like a WEED and the front that is still transitioning is growing at a regular but almost slow rate. That's giving me the extra push I need to clip those ends in the front.

Your 17 post? Meaning you already BC'd or without relaxer?

I just BC'd
I have been transitioning for a months, and I finally decided to seek out a salon while I was on my vacation in Charlotte, NC, that specialized in natural hair care. We cut off about six or so inches and then I got comb twists. I am very happy and it was the best thing I've done. I knew it was time and so will you. Good luck. There will be pictures and information to follow.

My goal is to transition for 2 1/2 years or full APL, whichever comes first.

I say do it! My first transition was for 15 months! This and the FINAL transition will be for 18-20 months! HHG! Can't wait to see your bc pics!
Re: How long before you BC'd?
I am at 14 months. I am doing 36 months...lol
If you have weaves it is easy. just make sure braids are not tight.
I keep my weaves in 14 weeks (3 and a half months) and rinse my braids with witch hazel twice or 3 times a week and wash and condition every 2 weeks. Make sure braids are always dried after wetting them.
I also work out 3 times a week which stimulates hair growth. My avatar pic was when I got my last perm 14 months ago. My hair is a couple inches longer now. I have trimmed once which was like 1 and half inches. I'm due for another trim. I'm trying to do it every 6 months. I'm doing at least 24 months. And I feel like I am protecting my natural ends by keeping the perm there, plus it is always braided up
I say you can definitely last longer. Just think of all that shrinkage you will have! I cut my front edges and I have almost 75% shrinkage. It looks like 1 inch and a half but straightens to 6. So I figure in 2 more years if I keep taking care of my hair it will look like I have 5 inches or so and straighten to around 18. Even 5 inches sounds extra short.
