Winter+Flat Iron+Buns=Length Retention?
Well, I'm thinking about flat ironing my hair this winter and keeping it in buns as a protective style. My hair is at the awkward length of right on and a little past my shoulders. I know the bunning will help keep moisture on my ends & help in retaining length. I am just wondering if flat ironing every two weeks will be too much heat to even be worth it. I only started wearing my hair curly since this around May of this year. Before that I was a flat iron queen! Heck, I guess even stretching it out with blow drying on light heat before bunning would work too. I just really want to see some growth retention in the spring! This is just an idea I tossed around today..Lemme know what you ladies think about it please.

Hey Mokacoffey!
It sounds like you have enough length that you could skip the flat iron. Also, have you solved your breakage problem? Would bunning further stress that area? Be careful, you don't want a setback.

Hey Falcon! I have been carefully watching the breakage area in my crown. It does not seem to be breaking any more & I think it's growing in nicely. I have enuf length to bun now, I just would be making it easier on myself if it were flat ironed is all. I have worn a bun 3 days this week and am making sure to not make the ponytail holder too tight and position it lower than the weak, breakage area. I feel like that bunning is the way to go for my protective style. I don't like the way they look on me though. I have an oval face and high cheekbones so to me it looks funny all pulled back. Alien head alert! I guess I can sacrifice looks for healthy hair....

Oh- also I honestly think the breakage was maybe caused by my shampooing everyday this past summer. I didn't know about co washing and that washing my hair w/ harsh poos was a really bad idea:-( thank god for learning!

I am going to be keeping my hair up as well over the winter. Kimmaytube has a great bun type style for twists that I have been toying with and I have received tons of compliments. I did spend 93 million dollars on really cute headbands to jazz up the look and to keep the fuzzies down when it is close to redoing my twists. I love this style!

I do not use the banana clip. I use the Goody ouchless thingy that is black and has the clip that she shows in the beginning. It works just as good for me.

@ lynnieluv: thanks for the video link! That's super helpful
@ dream: I've never seen that style before, but I pretty much love it! I can hardly wait to wash & twist up my hair now. Lol
- guess I won't be cuddling up next to my flat iron after all... Dang , I love this forum more everyday!

I just recently flat ironed my hair and it came out so nice I'm thinking about wearing it this way for the rest of winter.

I use the Goody ouchless thingy
So do I DreamMerchant. I also use the smaller ones to separate my hair from pre-poo ===>leave-in.

Ok, @ Lynnie, now I have to go get one of those bun former things. LOL And @ DreamMerchant, I love that bun style that KimLove does too. Very cute. I just wish myhair were thicker. I can probably do it though it just won't be as full as hers. And I didn't know they made those mini banana clips. I just have the regular sixed ones.
Great info ladies, (as always) Thanks!!!

I cannot use the banana clip because my hair is not full like hers and it just looks sparse. I use the black ouchless clippy thing. It gives me a nice full loking bun in the back.
Re: Winter+Flat Iron+Buns=Length Retention?
Last week I flat ironed my hair for the first time as a new natural and I loved it. I was also thinking about flat ironing once a week during the winter for low maintenance. My ends were smooth, my hair was moisturized the entire time, and I manipulated my hair much less.
BUT... I do like to wash my hair more than once a week and when I washed today, I didn't like how my hair clumped. It wasn't that i had straight parts, but it didn't clump enough (at first). It was as if each hair coiled/curled up individually and got super short. So I dont know. I am not flat ironing this week. It's raining, and I don't feel like it.

I tried out the style from Kimmaytube and I liked it! I think I will need to put more twists in though. But I'm working on making less "scalpy" twists to wear anyway as some of you may recall. Can I just say that i am so addicted to this forum, now? I love you ladies! So glad I found CN
