Does trimming help your hair grow??
ok so since ive been little ive always heard that trimming your hair helps its grow..I'm almost 4 months post BC and haven't trimmed my hair yet..I am starting to notice split ends so i know i probably need to go head and trim (which i will do myself..I've heard too many horror stories of natural women going into salons for a trim and walking out with another BC!!)
but my question is..does trimming help with hair growth??? I don't really see how because your just cutting the ends and not doing anything to affect the roots..so is it necessary???

Re: Does trimming help your hair grow??
Trimming does not help your hair grow. Cutting the ends have nothing to do with the roots. With that being said, trimming IMO is necessary when you have split ends and single strand knots. Split ends can not be repaired. If not cut, they will only continue to split up the length of the strand. Single strand knots will get caught on other hairs and cause tangles.
I hope this helps.

Re: Does trimming help your hair grow??
I honestly believe it's just a myth... but I heard it makes your hair grow fuller
I think you should get rid of your split ends as soon as possible for you to have healthy hair. I usually dust my ends myself every 2 months and it has been working just fine for the past 8 months..
I'm also kind of scared to go to a hair salon because there are only 2 hair salons for black hair I know in my area and as far as I know they aren't specified on natural hair.
The hair dressers probably won't know what to do to my hair except straightening it and then giving me a new haircut which actually isn't my aim for now

trimming doesnt make your hair grow. Cutting the end of a hair has no relation to the cell that causes the hair to grow. Your hair will appear healthier and fuller and you will NOTICE growth more with trims because there will be less split ends and breakage. hth

I can't imagine it helps with growth, but it has to help with retention. Split ends definitely need to go. I'm going to get a trim on Dec 3rd. Can't wait.

Are you going to trim or going to a salon, and what is the best way. I know that I probably need to because I have a lot of fly aways I'm noticing and sometimes single strand knots. I don't want to blow it out and flat iron because I'm afraid I can't my kinks and coils back....and my husband might like it straight and want to keep it that way :O
Re: Does trimming help your hair grow??
@Naturalin - I really can't say what's best. I think we all have to decide for ourselves.
I'm going to a salon. I BCed my hair, but that was a spiritual thing for me. I need professional maintenance. The salon I'm going to has several ways they trim. I've actually decided I'm going to let her do a pass with the flat iron and then trim. Lots of the naturals in my meetup (included one of my besties) go to her and they're all very happy with their trims. I don't even think I have split ends, but I sometimes think I have some stray permed ends here and there. I can't tell for sure, but after my twist outs I look at my hair and feel like I see permed ends, so I'm going to get a professional trim and move on from there.

I don't think trimming helps the hair grow. I do agree that it can help with retention. If you have single strand knots and split ends you want to get rid of them with a trim to help retain the length of your hair. If you allow split ends to remain in the hair it will go further up the hair shaft which means you will end up cuttting more hair in the end.

Re: Does trimming help your hair grow??
I agree with previous posters, I don't think that it necessarily leads to your hair growing longer but without it I do not think you will have healthy hair and I think that healthy hair does lead to hair growth, so it is an essential part of hair growth and works in your favor to get your ends trimmed, but on it's own I don't think that your hair will grow longer just by getting your ends trimmed. Re: Does trimming help your hair grow??
Oh and @ rayray19, I'm sure you already know this but make sure you get real good hair shears, not just plain old scissors. it does make a huge diff. I even went to a salon one time and I think her shears were good and raggedy. They even sounded like they were cutting wrong and harsh!!! LOL They have to be smooth sharp blades. If they are dull blades all it will do is damage your hair even more and you'll end up with even more split ends which leads to having to get it cut...AGAIN!!! LOL and obviously you don't want that if you r trying to gro it out. Good luck!
Re: Does trimming help your hair grow??
Just what I was wondering! I posted this a little while ago to my noob thread: https://curlynikki.forumotion.com/transitioning-f7/noob-with-a-few-questions-t7627.htm#175366 but wouldn't have if I'd found this first!
Yeah, I don't get trimming. I have to learn how to actually understand and recognize what a damaged hair strand or end looks like first. I'm not gonna cut just for the sake of cutting. *shrug*

It's ok if it's even (unless it is a BIG difference). You wont be able to tell unless you decided to wear your hair straight.

Re: Does trimming help your hair grow??
Yeah, Rayray. That's how I trim my hair. Mine pretty much ends up mostly even. But what I have also done is flat ironed my hair and sectioned it into 4 sections and trimmed the ends that way. At least that way you can see better how even or UNeven it is. Not sure how long your hair is but you may be able to try that the next time you trim.
