Honey Alternative for Winter
Happy Friday Curlies!
So, I was wondering... since it's winter and honey is a humectant, does anyone still use it in their henna mix? Has anyone found a good replacement for it? Or, I guess a better question is, has anyone had any success with a honey replacement during the winter?

I just mixed some henna tonight, for the first time. I will update you as to how this works for me.

Ok great. Thanks! Did you use honey? I'm mixing some this afternoon, but I'm not using honey. I just don't want my hair to dry out. It's already dry.

This is a very good question. Because I use honey with henna as well and love the results. I think I like it because it applys easily, stays on my head (not dripping everywhere) and rinses out well. So I am thinking natural aloe vera maybe a great substiute but I won't be applying henna for at least 2 more months.

I was reading on Jillipoo's blog (I put the link below) and it looks like Aloe Vera is also a humectant ladies. I don't know. I did my first Henna treatment last night and it went really well. I just did Nikki's routine sans honey and I loved it. So... maybe just removing the honey during the winter is okay...
It is really messy without it though....

Humectants in Winter
I don't think you have to worry about honey or other humectants in DTs, co-washes and rinses if you use moisturizing products also. I have not removed honey from my DTs. I'd continue to add honey to your henna especially since it's less messy for you.
I just use water in my most recent henna mixes. It doesn't drip. I wrap Saran wrap over my head.

Ok, this is true but what about lanolin as a substitute. Yes lanolin is a wax. But the medicinal grade can act as a lubricant, it inhibits bacteria, hypoallergic, used for dry or chapped skin and hair in our case. So it can counteract the dryness of the henna. And it can be a great emulsifier therefore no dripping. You probably don't need to use alot either.

After speaking with the lady at my local Indian Grocery, she states she uses just plain yogurt in her henna. Therefore, I mix my henna with plain yogurt. Then after rinsing the henna - I deep condition ( this is the mixture... Herbal Essence- Hello Hydration and add olive oil or sweet almond oil) and baggy for 1-2 hours) No dry hair for me.
Re: Honey Alternative for Winter
You know... Maybe I'll experiment w/ all of them and see what I get. I like the lanolin idea, so I'll try that in my next treatment, and I've never thought of doing yoghurt, though...
@ChrsLvsBks... and if honey doesn't dry your hair out, maybe i can even try that and aloe vera to see what I get.
Never hurts to try, right? ....

I've heard of people using yogurt or sour cream to stop the drips and they get lovely results. I will probably try yogurt the next time I do a henna treatment.
Re: Honey Alternative for Winter
Ok so maybe I should NOT say this part- but the yogurt is a smoother consistency- reminds me of applying a perm!
Re: Honey Alternative for Winter
YOGURT!!! Yes that is an excellent idea. But what brand or does it matter?
But wait yogurt is dairy and dairy has protein. I am protein sensitive. Hmmm, I will give it a try anyway.
