Re: Kinky Twists?
Okay then. I guess I'm just so excited about growing out my natural hair that I want to do everything for it! lol [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I'll save my deep conditioner for when I take the twists out.
Thanks for the input!

Re: Kinky Twists?
Hi Ladies,
I've been transitioning for a few months, my last relaxer was in November & I'm thinking about getting Kinky twists in for two months at the end of the summer. This thread has been really helpful but my question is about your edges. Did any of you experience problems with your edges thinning or anything like that? How did you take care of your edges while you had the twists in? my edges on my left side are thinner than my right (ugh) and I've been babying them which is also why I want to wait a couple more months before I get my braids or kinky twists.
thanks

Hello there. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Since I am currently wearing my first set of kinky twists, I can't tell you yet if they have done any severe damage to my edges, but I really doubt they will.
I would say that it is very important to make sure you tell whoever is putting your twists in to not do them so tightly around the edges. My edges were twisted a little too tightly at first so I applied lots of coconut oil and leave-in conditioner to them. Not only did this loosen them up in no time, but it moisturized my hair as well. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Also, if you choose to style your twists in updo's or even pull them back into a ponytail, make sure not to pull too tight as this will put a lot of stress on your edges and cause breakage. Not good. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
That's all I've got so far. I hope this helps! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Kinky Twists?
@songbird - this does help, thanks! I'll definitely be making some kind of spray concoction to take care o mine
@cecewms84 - they should work for senegalese twists or any kind of braids/extensions... i don't see why it wouldn't

Update on my twist situation:
As cute and low maintenance as they were, I am never getting kinky twists again! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I took them down after 5 weeks because they started to slip out a lot in the back and I was just getting tired of them in general. My hair was practically loc'ed! (My relaxed hair, that is. My new growth was awesome and tangle free!) Olive oil, coconut oil, enough conditioner for about 3 heads of hair, NOTHING was taking these knots out. The few that I could get out took small chunks of hair with them.
I deep conditioned overnight to see if my hair would be easier to detangle in the morning. No such luck. My new growth drank up the moisture and was practically radiating [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] , but my relaxed ends were still a matted mess. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I decided to go to a salon to let a professional deal with it because I just couldn't be bothered anymore. It was hell for the stylist to get the knots out as well, but after yanking a comb through my hair for about 45 minutes, they finally stopped putting up a fight.
Anyway, I now have a super cute curly sew-in that I've already gotten tons of compliments on. After the twist-tastrophe, I think sew-ins are the way I will go about transitioning from now on.
Good grief!

Re: Kinky Twists?
Wow, I've been getting twist for years and never had trouble taking them out except when I left them in too long one time, and Lord, that was a mistake. They're really only meant to last about 6 to 8 weeks. They're not like box braids so you may have had them in too long. It can be damaging to your hair, particularly the edges when they're left in too long.
I wore mine up until last month and I hadn't had a relaxer since April 2009. No knots. Sorry you had such a bad experience.

Re: Kinky Twists?
I only had them in for about 5 weeks! I didn't think I'd have any problems. Maybe it was the way they were done? Or the fact that they were so small? The type of hair? Not too sure.
Maybe I'll try again as a protective style when I am 100% natural, as no damage occurred to my natural hair.

Re: Kinky Twists?
My first thought was that it was the braider but I didn't want to presume. Once I had some bad hair that I had to take out in two weeks, it was itching so much. I never had that before, so things vary. But I really love twist. They're my signature style. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I know you're relieved it's over. I had bad braids many years ago and I swear I cut half my hair off getting them out. I was traumatized.
Enjoy the sew-in! I'm sure it's adorable.

Re: Kinky Twists?
Perhaps it was the braider. I had never gotten kinky twists before but she did seem a little rough and and in a rush to finish.
But anyway thanks a bunch for your feedback and encouragement Renny, it means a lot!

Where did you find the Earth Aloe Vera Gel? Can I get that at Walmart too? Is the Olive Oil just the regular Bertrelli extra virgin olive oil.

OMG!! The same thing happened to me on Friday night!! I only had mine in for 4 weeks. It took 5 people combing out my hair for 3 hours!! I did my senegalese twists myself and I used Taliah Waajid Lock, Twist and Hold and my hair was pretty much loc'd at the demarcation line (where relaxer and natural hair meet). I took a pic of my "birds nest." It was awful, I thought I was going to have to BC for sure, but I went to the salon the next day and they made everything okay. It was my first time going to a natural salon and it was a wonderful experience. I will probably go back there for my BC! I'll post my pics when I get home (I'm sneaking on CN at work...shhh...don't tell [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] )

I got my aloe vera gel from walmart, in the section near the body lotion. It was less than $4 too. I also got the regular Crisco brand olive oil, it was the cheapest and it's made from the same stuff as the more expensive kind. Just make sure its Extra Virgin.

OMgoodness!! Your hair is gorgeous! What did you/they use in your hair to get it soooo shiny and moist looking. My hair comes out too dry at the roots. Especially in the back because that is where I have a lot of new growth. How much perm do you have left?
Re: Kinky Twists?
MomT,
Your hair looks amazing. I'm in Atlanta too. Please share where you had that done. I'm having my book release party in August and I'd like to have a professional look.
Thanks.

Re: Kinky Twists?
Thank you! I went to Curltopia in Smyrna, GA. It took me an hour to get there from Lawrenceville, but it was so worth it! Stacey was very patient with me and asked her co workers to help her detangle my hair so she wouldn't have to cut it. I really appreciated that! They washed my hair with DevaCare No Poo shampoo and conditioned with Jane Carter Nutrient Replinishing Conditioner. I really liked the No Poo, the peppermint made my scalp tingle and feel really clean, I didn't like the smell of the Jane Carter, but it left my hair soft. To style they used Jane Carter Nourish and Shine under Curls Gel-les-c, I did not like the 2 mixed together because it did leave some white residue behind. It was gone by the second day, but I didn't like that it was there in the 1st place. They did 8 - 2 strand flat twists to the scalp and sat me under the dryer. My hair takes forever to dry so I was under there a while. When she took out the twists she used Design Essentials Silk Essentials on her fingertips which felt like a gloss, similar to Garnier Fructis Sleek n Shine (which is what I've been adding to my hair every 2 days). I have a lot of relaxed hair left, I only have about 3.5 inches of new growth, so the majority of my hair is relaxed. flat twisting to my scalp helped out a lot to blend my 2 textures and when I got home I added my oil mix (tea tree, coconut and grapeseed oils) to my scalp because I get an itchy dry scalp. It wasn't as expensive as I thought, I only paid $55 and that included my 3 hour detangling session. I will definitely go back there when it's time to big chop. It was a great experience to see how she did my hair, that way I can replicate it later. That was my first time going to a natural salon and immediately noticed the absence of the burned hair smell as soon as I hit the door. I've never seen so many naturals in one place before, I did not mind being there for 8 hours. I learned a lot and got a bunch of style ideas.

What's the name of your book?
Re: Kinky Twists?
MomT,
My first novel came out Dec 2009, Secrets and Lies. It's available at all your large bookstore chains, Barnes and Nobles, Borders, Books A Million and of course on Amazon.com. Although it's sold out in alot of the local bookstores and they don't always reorder. That's one of the tough things about being a new author. Time-limited shelf space in the bookstore.
My second novel, An Inconvenient Friend comes out on August 1st. I have excerpts on my website at http://www.rhondamcknight.net
Thanks so much for asking.

Great. Thanks Mom2. I'll definitely send an invite for the book release party. Several authors will be in attendance.

My hair looked the same way after taking out my twists. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] It was awful and I also thought I'd have to prematurely BC. What do you think could have gone wrong?
Your twistout was fab by the way! Glad the situation was handled so well at the salon. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
