HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
So its exactly 2 weeks today since my BC [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] still lovin it, but I cant seem to keep my hands out of my hair! Am always twirling, twisting, rubbin' you name it. From what I have gathered from other forums (and other readings) this can be damaging and drying to the hair, so shouldn't be practiced. So I decided to find a way of fighting my disorder [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.].
Result: My first protective style. It took me over an hour to do these twists/finger coils, not as nice since am new to hair stylin', but I figured, am going to be busy studying these next few days, not going any where... so might as well. Yep, so I did.
I twisted dry hair, sealed with Shea butter, sprayed some of my homemade spritz (oils and condish), then applied my satin wave cap.
I plan on keeping this style for at least four days, refreshing/moisturizing daily with my home made spritz/ Aubrey organics leave-in moisture, and of course I am going to be keepin' my wave cap on. It keeps my hair soft and above all-NO HAND IN HAIR [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
How do you guys fight this syndrome?

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
I'm not going to fight it. I like feeling the curls and testing their springiness. I squeeze them and stretch them out and for me it's a good way to gauge my progress. The fatter and firmer the curl, the better I know that either I've applied my products correctly and/or my hair is getting stronger, healthier, etc.
So, while I understand HIHS contributes to frizz and whatnot, I can't help myself and I'm not going to try anymore. LOL

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
i find i do it a little less as time goes by but i don't even fight it really. the more i try not to the more i think about touching it. if i think about not touching my hair then i touch it anyway but if im not thinking about then no touching.
Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
I don't fight it either. I figure that as time passes and I get used to my natural hair, I will touch it less and less. But right now, I enjoy touching my hair in all its naturalness. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
It's almost like i cant help it. Much to the dismay of my friend. She hates when she is talking to me and I'm twirling a curl at the same time. She says it DISTRACTS HER! I mean I used to play in and twirl my hair around all the time when I was relaxed, transitioning and now natural. I never had a problem with breakage or dryness.

Enjoy your HiH syndrome!! I enjoyed mine! But as my hair grew in, I made a conscious effort to keep my hands outta my hair. Enjoy your hair!

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
I can't help myself either when it comes to my newly natural hair. I am amazed everday because I know each day will be different when it comes to my hair. As time goes on, I hope that I am accustomed to my natural hair. Until then, I will indulge in feeling and touching my natural hair LOL!
Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
I've been natural almost 9 months (9th of May) and I still have HIH syndrome. Right now Roxie (that's my hair's name) is in two strand twist pin up do. That's the only reason my hands are not in my head.
I dont fight it but keeping my hair tied up when I am at home helps.

I'm like Lynnie. I don't fight it anymore but I do keep it under a bonnet at home.
Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
You guys are right, I don't think I should fight it, I guess after a while it would stop or lessen.
For you ladies who did the big chop, did you experience dryness of your ends, how did you treat it?

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
I dont think I really had dryness as much I just need to keep co washing. Its been almost a month since the BC and it just now is starting to stay moisturized throughout the day. But I have only managed to get second day hair with a wash n go. Only because as time goes on I dont like how my hair doesnt look as fresh as it did the day before.

me too!! I think that makes them less protective for me. The only PS I don't touch are cornrows, LOL
Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
(standing up) My name is fnggrant and I have hair in hand syndrome.
I've been natural 3 years and its like a magnet. I like feeling the plumpness of my twists, softness, when I stretch it and it bounces back, ect. But I only do it at home for some reason. I've tried to fight it, but can't.

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
Hand in Hair Syndrome is DEFINITELY an epidemic LOL...I used to suffer from it alot...but then I was reading that protective styling should really help curb that addiction...usually when i do wash n gos or twistouts thats when the HIH (hand in hair) gets really bad for me, so I bun it and french braid it throughout the week so I will feel compelled to touch it less

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
We need to start a support group, I'm still transitioning, but I can't keep my hands out of my hair. I did see a video once where someone said they didn't touch their hair without some type of oil/moisturizer on it, I think I'm going to try doing that, that way I won't feel as bad about doing it
Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
I have a really serious problem like really bad....I really can't stop..im twirling hair as I write....I feel so guilty.....I'm scared I'm going to pull all of my hair out...honestly I take 20-25 minutes each morning twirling and twisting my hair...I am late to work every day bc I tend to mediate while twirling and I just get lost in translation...before you know I am rushing to get out of the apartment....my hair is still too short for protective styles so wash-n-gos are my only options at this point....can someone please give suggestions on how to curb this addiction....

Re: HAND-IN-HAIR SYNDROME
Im also glad its just not me with the HIH problem..... i love touching my hair (as well as my boyfriend) i love my hair and i have heard that stimulating the scalp promotes growth and i can honestly say my hair has grown alot in a month. 2.5 inches!!!!
