Help TWA won't curl! Empty Help TWA won't curl!

Post by CurlyBrightGirl 11th March 2010, 2:03 am

Ok I just BCed my hair a week and a half ago. I only transitioned for 2 & 1/2 months. I had a natural hair stylist cut out the perm and I was looking forward to having new itty bitty curls. However my hair is not really curling! I don't know what to think really. I haven't had natural hair since I was 6 or 7 so I don't remember what type of texture I should be expecting. My hair has a few ripples but the top is basically straight. Do you all think that maybe my stylist didn't cut all the perm out or is it just my hair? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

you may just have a looser pattern than you expected, bigger curls don't actually curl, until they are longer, versus tighter curl that express curl pattern at shorter lengths!!! just give it some time, see what happens when it grows out in a couple of months. you hair also appears to be coarse(just means larger individuals strands) they should curl or wave up soon with a little more growth!!!

You can use certain products to enhance your curl pattern. I bc'ed in October and I didn't really see my curls until January. I used Miss Jessie's products at first, and personally I still like MJ...you just have to put a good conditioner under her products, and shampoo with a sulfate shampoo.

It will take time as lexibugg stated, but you can try gel..(some say this helps with their curl pattern) as well as certain natural products such as Kinky Curly Curling Custard; MiraCurl; and lots more.

As you read around the forum you will find a lot of information that may help you. However.....I love you hair!!!!

I agree with Lexi. It could be that you have a looser curl pattern or you may just need to give it more time. My hair was like that when I first got my hair cut and I just had to give it some time. Once it started to grow, small curls started to appear.

The next few months should be interesting. You'll get to find out what your hair is REALLY like. Exciting! Smile

rockin...that is so funny becuz after i did my bc i had the exact same problem. i got my amber rose cut and within a few wks of it growing out i was expecting solange curls!! umm NO!! my top was still straight so i thought the same thing "maybe i got perm left on top". needless to say, i found out my texture is more wavy/straight on top vs the sides which are more curly.

be patient, and expect the unexpected. u just never know what ur gonna get and when, lol. once my twa was growing out i learned from our fellow curlies to apply more product to the straighter parts to get more curl definition. giiiiiiirl, enjoy that cut, i actually miss it. it was nice n simple. i used MJ in the beginning too but now that im a pj i try it ALL!! i know exactly how u feelin though so let ur hair do its thang and report back in like 2-3 months. your gonna so enjoy this journey. march will make month 6 for me. i started out with your cut and now i have....

almost 3 inches later

I totally understand what you are going through...I panicked too when I bc'd...like where are my curls! are you kidding me! I know I saw them when I was transitioning! but not even two weeks after my BC, these lil curls started popping up everywhere and the frizz areas reduced significantly (look at the thread "February Bc'ers...tell your Story!" for pics)....it's my one month anniversary and am starting to get the gist of my daily and weekly regimen of how to take care of my hair; you will too I promise...just takes a lil time and patience! Oh and congrats on your BC...you look great!! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Congrats! Just be patient and wait till your hair grows out more. When I first did my BC my hair didn't curl as well ( I transitioned for 9 months), until I started giving my hair lots of moisture.

Hey ladies I really just wanted to thank you guys for taking the time out to respond to my cry for help (that sounds so dramatic lol). But really I appreciate the advice and encouragement. I'm the only person I know that has natural hair and BCed so all of you have been an inspiration and a great source of advice. Thanks again for all the supportive words and I'll keep ya'll updated on my hair progression:-)

There's another thread somewhere that brought up the topic of having multiple curl patterns on the same strand of hair. Our hair is so interesting and changes as it grows. I've been natural all my life and noticed that as I've gotten older, my curl pattern has changed and is actually different than it was when I was younger. Enjoy the ride and watch your hair change and grow, get curly and/or wavy, and do 'what it do'. lol
