Mahogany your hair is my motivation! I was going to ask about the crisco too, that doesn't smell?

All the curls motivate me, I just think I need more length. I want a twist out so bad! My curls love my scalp! Can you say SHRINKAGE Hahahahaha

The crisco has no smell if it is fresh, crisco is just Soybeanoil and cotton seed oil, which is ingredience in a whole lot of natural hair products, lol u might be using crisco in ya hair all along but paying a whole lot more for it because they slap another lable on it and call it another name. It's not a new thing to use it in the hair. Here are a few curlies that swears by this:http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/showthread.php?t=67465

http://thefeistyhouse.blogspot.com/2009/08/crisco.html
www.urbancurlz.com/.../crisco-my-miracle-moisturizer.html

I love crisco in the hair and I've been using it for years, my grandma use to use it in my hair when we were kids and we had long healthy hair, so now that I'm back to being Natural I'm using what I know for sure works for my hair, plus I can get it anywhere and it is cheap. I live in Boise Idaho, no store here or for miles from here carry shea, mango, avocado or any of the more expensive butters, my crisco has not faild me yet. Hey if you r suffering from dry ends this winter I challenge you to try crisco and see what that does for you, i know you'll come back with glowing reviews. Use it like shea butter and don't use to much a dab will do ya.

For me its easier to keep flat twists from unraveling so thats why I prefer them when doing a twist out. I also hate to do two strand twists and then sleep on them at night and they are mushed in the morning. I don't really have that problem with flat twists.

So I finally did a decent set of flat twists and the twist out came out great. The only problem is I used shea butter and it's just sitting on the top of my hair. It feels greasy when I touch it, but I really like the way it looks. Any suggestions ladies? Thanks.

@naturalnurse04...was your hair wet when you applied the shea butter? For me it seems to take better when my hair is damp even just a little bit

My hair was damp. I don't even think that I used too much shea butter, but it still feels greasy. Maybe I should try other butters? It's frustrating because I love the way it looks, but I don't want to leave greast spots everywhere! Shocked

Another option is to mix in some olive oil with the shea, a friend of mind taught me how to do that with a spoon. Blend the two together adding a little bit of olive oil at a time while you go. It's a lot simpler than trying to melt the shea and add the olive oil.

If that doesn't work...... :?:

@ tiashauntee: Thanks for the suggestions. I'm hoping that maybe the greasiness will go away after a while because I really like the flat twistout. I think I may have finally found a protective style that I can do! Maybe I will master the two strand twists next. That's my goal!

I'm currently in transition(14 mos) and have found the results of a two strand twist better than the flat twist out. It's probably because my ends are still permed and it just doesn't look right and I also have to curl the ends to blend with the natural texture. I've tried both of these styles on wet hair and I seal my ends with Carol's Daughter Hair Butter and shingle with Curls Souffle by Curls

I faithfully watch PRETTYDIMPLES01 and the CURLYCHRONICLES on Youtube for styles and tips. PRETTYDIMPLES01 is fabulous!

Im the opposite of your Hampton. My 2 strand twist out dont come out nearly as cute as my flat twistouts. I have to add a little curl to the end with my fingers when I'm done but that talks all of a few seconds so its no big deal.

I love flat twistouts! I did them most of the last winter. Here's a few pics:

This is one of my first flat twistouts...

I got the hang of it and got some great results!

I use a mixture of: Aloe vera gel, sweet almond oil, Lotta body setting lotion and glycerin on my twist

I love flat twist! Like some others when I do two strand twists they are flat..flat..flat in the morning. Usually when I twist I will use the IC Fanstasia Gel (I mix oil in my gel b/c it makes it less crunchy) or the ORS Lock and Twist gel and I only like to do my twists when my hair wet. Also I like to use CD's Healthy Hair Butter.

Ok, so now I gotta try the flat twists again! :-) Ladies all of your results look really good. I'm inspired to give it a try again. :-) This time I will take it easy on the shea butter. I hate that greasy feeling too! Hopefully I wont end up having to put a head band on and making a curly puff. :-)

I love flat twistouts! I flat twist my hair every night before bed. Two strand twists take much longer for me to do. The flat twist give me the perfect combination of stretching and definition.

Post by transitioning? 3rd February 2010, 6:33 pm

Hello Ladies,

I am just startig to transition (I'm 5 weeks out). I'm worried about breakage. I wanted to know. How are twist outs a form of protective styling if I'm re-twisting every night and leaving my hair out during the day.

Thanx

I don't think twist outs are protective styles. You would have to leave them twisted in order to protect your hair.

Yeah, I agree with @pinkrage... the reason why twists/twist outs are considered a protective style is because a lot of natural ladies are able to leave the twists in their hair for a few days and then rock a twist out for a couple more... but since I'm only 2+ months into transitioning, my twists don't have the full look to leave them in.
