Need Winter Advice

Hello Ladies,

I'm new to the site but stalked it for about 6 months before joining. It's been a year and almost 2 months since I last relaxed, so this is my first winter naturall. I NEED HELP PLEASE!!! My hair is so dry since the wheather changed and my summer routine is not working anymore. My hair still looks dry even after I deep condition and not to mention the water is hard here. Can someone please tell me a good product to buy!! My hair type is a 3c/4a/4b, not really sure just depends on what mood my hair is in that day. I know I will have to stop using my current shampoo, Come Clean by KC, I believe that is the third culprit next to the water and weather!! Coconut oil, shea butter and aloe juice no longer help either. Can someone please help me?!..... Thank you!

Mix coconut oil with almond and/or sunflower oil to prevent thickening if you still want to use this oil.

castor oil mixed with almond, light sesame or sunflower is a good replacement for shea butter

substitute rosewater for aloe juice

I am not familiar with Come Clean by KC. Hold on, the other ladies will respond with suggestions.

It's my first winter as full natural too (I bc:d in March) and it is COLD over here!
My summer regimine, cowash, w&gs, cocnut oil as the only leave in, etc is not gonna work.

This winter I am all about protective styling.

I shampoo every 5-6 days (Mixed Chicks, not the best but it's what I got) and use AO GBP or AO Honeysuckle Rose wich I add coconut oil and castor oil to, today I also added argan oil, which might have been overkill.

I have blended my "own" leave in.
The base is AO blue camomile, I squirt in argan oil, avocado oil, wheatgerm oil and castor oil.
I apply a HUGE amount directly after showering (I squeeze out the water, never towel dry), it gets everywhere and do 2 buns, let dry.

When I wake up in the morning my hair has dried and feels moisturized.

I might pull it back to one bun/ponytail, 6 braids or make smaller twists, which I usually unravel for a twist-/braidout 3 days later.

I would never use this amount of product in the summer but I am fighting off the 5 degree (farenheit)weather over here!

I'm familiar with Kinky Curly Come Clean and that sounds like half your problem. It's "sulfate-free" but it's not formulated for hard water. I wrote this article about shampooing, please take a look...

After you get a good shampoo, your other products might work just fine. If not, I second Allwoman's suggestions of Mixed Chicks shampoo and AO HSR....that's actually a pretty good lineup.

I've never used the Come Clean, but I always hear about how it makes the hair feel stripped. So I'm sure that has something to do with it.

If it's financially possible you could look into a shower filter. I purchased one when the hard water was tearing my skin UP! The relief was almost instant once I started using it. I got mine from Aquasana

I tried the Mixed Chicks as one of my first products but it dried my hair out terribly. I'm going to attempt some bantu knots today ( I just hope my hair is long enough and it turns out ok)!! Thanks for the comments!!

I searched all over and couldn't find the Cantu shea butter. So I first tried some unrefined shea butter form Whole Foods mixed with olive oil; loved it!! I also tried shea butter mixed with jojoba oil and I really love how the jojoba oil moisturizes (it last for days but I think I over did it). So I need to be careful that I don't use too much of it. I haven't tried the recipe yet but I plan to very soon. Thank you soo much!!

Thank you for the filter suggestion. I thought about it a while ago, but my lease will be up soon and I plan to move out of state for my PhD program. So I hadn't decided if I want to invest my money into one yet. I will definately keep it in mind though. Thanks for your feed back!!!

You're so welcome! I'm glad you found everything helpful. I second drmsd's suggestion about the shower filter. You can buy cheaper ones that attach to the shower head in your apt. You have to replace the cartridge every 6 months, but they're only $13. Have fun!

Oh, you're so welcome. It was a recipe from another lady on here.

You should be able to find Cantu at Walmart. That's where I got it from. Did you try the regular beauty supply stores, or Target, Kmart maybe??? I go to walmart for just about everything!!!! LOL Hope you find it soon though cuz Ilike it a lot. In fact it's about half gone cuz I use it on my girls' hair too (I have 3 girls so it goes fast when using on 4 heads of thick hair!!! LOL)

Winter season climate have cool and calm. Due to this we have dry skin. We do proper care our hair in winter. there are many ways like wash our hair with shampoo and do massage in hair. As well as we should oil massage in hair.
