Naturally Long Frustration
Hello ladies!! I'm contemplating on cutting my hair... My hair is about a 1/2 inch past my bra strap when straightened, but when curly it brushes my shoulders (its really thick). My question is, do you guys ever get tired of your hair? I've just become bored with my hair, my main style is a 3 strand twist/twist out, but I'm bored with that too lol. I've thought about loc's but I'm afraid I might grow bored with that as well. Ladies out there who feel the same way, how did you get over this hump?

I'm sort of at this hump now. I'm going to get my hair straightened and then hope to miss my curls again (it always happens) my hair is a little pass APL (altho I'm going to get a trim)
Re: Naturally Long Frustration
I felt the same way a few months ago. I thought if it was shorter then everything would be easier (which it would). LUCKILY, I remembered how much my hair has gone through since I was younger and how much its changed. Sorta like a story. If you get bored I suggest trying some new styles. There are ways to make your hair appear shorter too.
It totally worked for me.

Re: Naturally Long Frustration
My hair is super long, too--middle of my back when straightened. But, my issue with it isn't running out of styles. My issue with it is that it takes me too long to do things to it--twisting takes forever, washing and conditioning take forever. I've been tempted to big chop many times...

I contemplated chopping as well or getting a really short cut.
Re: Naturally Long Frustration
Question you guys: How long did it take you guys to grow your hair long? ( So impatient.)

That too!! It took me 2 days to do my 3 strand twists, and I can't dare try and style it when its dry, its too big! I have to have it wet to do anything with it, and it takes a day or two to dry if I put it up in a ponytail. @Nali1987 I've been natural for about 9 years now, I kept it a little past shoulder length for most of that, but then just let it grow. So from shoulder length to where it is now about 3 years.

@ Nali1987: 2 years from big chop (<1 inch of hair) to my current length. I've been told my hair grows fast.

Re: Naturally Long Frustration
I feel the same way sometimes. I usually change it up if I get bored with my style:
twist-outs
wash-n-gos
buns high and low
updos
two braids
side part, middle part
pony puffs
pompadour, etc.
I'm thankful I have a lot of options.
The problem I have is the time it takes to detangle and the fact that I have to take extra care of with weekly DC or it will get very dry. The product usage is pretty great so the cost is a factor; especially since I have to use a fair amount due to the fact my hair soaks it up! Henna has helped strengthen my hair, but that takes time - and money.

Yep, lol. So I cut off a few inches last Oct. I loved it. If it grew once, it will grow again.

I aim for shoulder length hair and reading this thread has me convinced that I should go for healthy hair instead of long and healthy....I know myself...I couldn't cope if my hair, when at your length, were to be thick.

Re: Naturally Long Frustration
Thank you ladies for all your input!!! I just braided my hair last night and when I take it out I'm going to cut it. (just a few inches) @CarlaAR you make a good point, it takes me about 5-7 minutes to detangle my hair then I have to style it wet or I won't be able to do a darn thing with it unless I blow dry it (no thanks lol). My hair soaks up any product I put in as well, so I run out faster. @zanajh, I'm curious to see how I would do with locs, I really like them, (my husband wants me to loc it up) but I'm TERRIFIED that after I get it done and it locks that I won't like it on me . lol GEEZ why is this so hard?! Its just hair!!!

Sometimes a few inches makes a word of difference. Why cant you style your hair w/o blow drying it first? I've thought about locks or sister locks (softer - not as stiff and more style options) but I just cant imagine not being able to comb my hair. The decision shouldn't be so hard since I NEVER straighten my hair. Sister locks takes hours and hours and hours to install (12 hours for my aunt who's 3c and have 1/3 less hair than I do in length and volume) and a ton of money - I would have to cut my hair short first. (whine, whine, wine)

When my hair drys it spreads out into a huge shapeless mass of fluff. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I detangled it and just left it all day and this is what happened..........
You'd think I'd know how to manage my texture by now lol I haven't. My curls don't clump like I think they should. I'm going to make an appt with some salon ( ) hopefully I can find a natural salon somewhere around here and maybe be able to make up my mind then.

Re: Naturally Long Frustration
Has your natural hair aways been this way? Without seeing your hair close up, you look like you're 4b? If that's the case, you probably wouldn't have clumpy curls. What are you using while you're detangling and after? Are you using a butter, styler, gel? Something to set your hair with?
I also think you hair color MAY be an issue. When I bleached my hair once (had highlights in the '90s) ALL my curl in those areas was gone. My hair was bone straight after washing until that part eventually fell out.

Re: Naturally Long Frustration
Isis, your hair has shape. It looks full and thick. You may benefit in keeping your hair in braids or twists until dry. Other ideas include styling while damp. Seeing all your hair out and air dried can make thinking of styling as a serious chore.
I read Nikki's post recently about how she goes three weeks before cleansing. It was quite interesting. I never thought about it.

Re: Naturally Long Frustration
hey there! my hair unstretched sits at or a lil past my shoulders and at my boobies when stretched. my hair is pretty thick esp at the roots and likes to curl up on itself. i loved my short natural hair, and although sometimes it can be frustrating with styling and detangling longer natural hair i wouldn't change it for the world (maybe cuz i have had short hair for a LONG time and the longer hair is welcomed change0. if your getting bored with ur look how about experimenting with flexi-rods, strawllers, permed rods, caruso steam rollers, etc?? those give curl definition but in completely different ways. i am already a fan of flexi and permed rods and can't wait to try the others.
i have been wearing two strand twists since october ish of 2009, and i wear them for weeks at a time (usually a month or a lil more than a month). i have always liked locs, but i wouldn't commit to them cuz they are not as diverse enough for me, and so twists give me the look without the commitment. if u do want to loc, i do know that there are some yt videos showing people unlocing their hair.
