The Hair Honeymoon
Hi ladies! I am a new curly girl currently transitioning to natural. I was just wondering if anyone else is going through or has gone thru the "Hair Honeymoon". I would like to think all of the changes that my hair care affair have inspired are lasting but I would like to know from some seasoned vets, does the love last? What have been some of the changes you made, if any? Do you guys have any tips to make the process go a little more smoothly?
BTW changes I personally have made included but are not limited to:
BTW changes I personally have made included but are not limited to:
HIH disease (I know that's a no no but I can't help it!)
Improved self confidence
Motivation to FINALLY lose about 30 lbs
Most of my reading now is about caring for my hair and body
Product Junkyism
My diet is much improved (lots more fruits and veggies)
I have started taking a multi-vitamin (Which I actually remember to take everyday)

Re: The Hair Honeymoon
Hey Tiff. First off, cudos to you on the motivation to lose weight. I am there myself and I know it can be a struggle. I have HIH myself but while my hiar is twisted it's not as bad. When I wear my hair curly I am ALWAYS pulling at my hair, pulling out the knots and strands!! SO bad, I know!!! But for about a month now it's been better.
So anyway, I have been natural for about 15 years. But I didn't transition like you are. I just BC and I loved it. In fact I BCd several times since, with the most recent one being in 2006 or 2007. Unfortunately though, in all those years I never really took much effort to actually "care" for my hair. I just "did" my hair. I mean I used conditioners and oils, washed weekly, ALWAYS did twists and WnGs. But I never knew there was so much more to hair care until I joined CN. I don't think I ever stuck with any one product, it was always something different.
So for me, I am very happy to say that, YES!!! The love DOES last!! Not once have I ever even thought about doing the creamy crack. There's no need for it. I don't miss it in the least. Even when I DID have a relaxer I wasn't keeping it up and I always just let the new growth come in, no regular touch ups!!!
Now, thanks to curlynikki and youtube....I know SO much more it's ridiculous!!! I am so glad to have found these info/forum sites. Had it not been for my hair recently thinning/shedding I may not have found all this stuff. So what I thought was a bad thing turned out to be a great thing!!!! I have been taking better care of my hair now and have more knowledge about hair care.
As for the changes I have made, they've only been recent changes. I henna'd for the 1st time this past Saturday!!! I've deep conditioned twice in the past month for the 1st time in only God knows how long, YEEEAARRSS!!!!! Yes, I know, that's bad!!! LOL I am using more natural remedies for itching and hopeful growth!! And I am keeping my hair in twists as a protective style and will get it cornrowed into an updo for Christmas. I hope to keep up this protective styling all winter.
So yes, the love does last!! I hope it does for you too!! (sorry this is so long!! -- lately I have become pretty passionate about this whole thing!! )

Re: The Hair Honeymoon
Lol, I have gotten pretty good at hiding the lil bit of perm that is left (You should see my fro). I only officially decided to go natural in October, lol. But I was never consistent with perms anyway. I have not permed since sometime in 2009 I think. i will play detective one day so I can write my story. I am not sure though b/c I found a brand new box perm in my closet. Lol, its going back to Wal-Mart for some store credit so I can buy other stuff for my hair! LOL! Lol, I totally agree, the decision has affected my overall self.

Re: The Hair Honeymoon
Hi Ambitous! I am newly natural, but I have a daughter who has been natural for 13 years. It's funny because the last 11 years I have learned to do her hair just fine before I learned all this new info about natural hair care, lol. Now I'm getting better in figuring out what her hair likes and doesn't like.
I can totally feel you on the exercise and weight loss part. I was seriously thin all my life until 5 years ago when my metabolism caught up with me. I know I will never be a size 4 again, but I gained too much after the birth of my second child last year. The first time, the weight slid off; the second time, wooo baby--the weight stuck to me and it's been hell getting rid of it. My husband is ex-military so he is awesome about waking up at 5 am and doing P90X. I tried it and almost died. I bought Jillian Michael's dvds which were insane, but I've been sticking with her. My girlfriends rock climb, do yoga, etc so I have a good support system. We can support each other if you would like.
Now to answer your question, I haven't made too many changes. People always commented that I was fearless, so chopping off my hair was just another one of those things, I guess. I've been talking about doing it for 3 years for my daugther and one day, I just did it.
Again, welcome and I hope to hear from you on the boards!

Re: The Hair Honeymoon
Well hi there fleur_novelle! Don't worry, you will likely hear from me a lot. thank you for the warm welcome! I love your hair. I have that anxiety that a lot of women have about doing the bc so I decided to transition.
Lordy, 5 am? It comes to quickly! That would be awesome! I could always use some extra motivation when it come to dropping these lbs. I am currently trying Insanity. Its hard but I feel good after the work outs. I think when I have figured out with these extreme videos is that I should not be trying to keep up with the instructor or graduates. Their bodies are all tones and fit b/c they've struggled through the program a time or 2 already, lol. How long is Jillian Michaels' program?

Re: The Hair Honeymoon
That's a good idea! I never have been good at calorie counting. Like how would I count them for the stuff I make at home like fresh veggies or chicken? 135? Girl I have not been there in a LOOOOOONG time, lol. I would be happy to see 140 though. 13 weeks? I really do think it is do-able. What are the guidelines for this challenge? I'm sure a food/workout journal are in line. Those things help me be accountable...

Re: The Hair Honeymoon
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm transitioning as well. Since then I have been very aware of what I'm using on my body and hair. I thought to myself if I'm this diligent to examine what I'm putting on my hair then I should be the same about what I put in my mouth. Since HS yes I put on some lbs myself but I'm trying to get back with it myself. Getting to my top floor apartment is a workout and I'm like uh no boo you gotta work something out haha.
