What is the difference between giving myself a hot oil treatment and massaging oil onto my scalp?

During a hot oil treatment, the oil is applied to the hair and usually involves heat. It is later rinsed out. When I do a scalp massage, I put the oil on my scalp and massage. I usually don't rinse out.

Hot oil treatment- conditions the hair and adds shine
Oil on scalp-relieves dry scalp, massaging increases blood flow and stimulates growth
