Holes in the Hair Strand Empty Holes in the Hair Strand

Post by Janique 22nd September 2010, 3:19 pm

These past few months, I have been seeing holes on individual hair strands. Everytime I see one, I cut them out. I'm afraid I will have to cut inches off to get rid of them. I did dye my hair with red (which barely showed) sometime in June, so that may be the culprit. I don't know if I should just cut my hair, or just trim it normally. Also, when you color your hair, do you have to use products geared for color-treated hair???

sounds like ends that are getting ready to split. I can NOT stand when this happens because I become OBSESSED with pulling them apart! urgh, just thinking about it makes me want ot look for some!

But these holes aren't even at the ends. they are at the middle of my hair strand or lower.....That's what upsets me....

Some people call these bubbles. I have them too. I have no idea why. I can maybe blame it on being pregnant and nursing and my hair was not getting the nutrients it needed so it weekened. I cut them when I see them but like you said, they are in the middle of the hairshaft. I think that when I flat-ironed my hair, the heat could have made the water inside the hair shaft expand causing the hair to break in places.

These holes in your hair are called Acquired trichorrhexis nodosa and occur when the hair cuticle becomes worn and the inner fibres become shredded. The hair can then split along the hair shaft creating gaps, if you will, in the hair. It can be caused by heat damage, constant manipulation of the hair etc.
Treatment for this is to be extremely gentle with the hair and desist harmful grooming practices e.g bristle brushing, heat styling, scratching of hair and scalp etc. Also you have the option of cutting ABOVE the gap with hair scissors (and I stress hair scissors as other household scissors will only leave your ends frayed and create a split end also you must cut above the gap as cutting in the middle of it or under will create a split end. If the gap is high up the shaft you have the option of simply waiting for your hair to grow it and in the meantime taking good care of it.

By examining individual strands of hair you can tell if there is a split, white dot, or bubble. Try taking small sections of hair and looking closely at it or use a mirror for places where your eyes cant reach.
