How do you achieve volume? Empty How do you achieve volume?

Post by jamaicacurl 16th November 2009, 2:26 pm

My hair used to be very thick. But after blow drying and flat ironing for years and especially after having children and losing some hair, my hair is not as thick as it used to be. Now that I wear it curly all the time I want to have the big hair too!

I sometimes use a volumizing conditioner, which seems to help but I need advice from you ladies on what else I need to do to achieve thicker (or thicker looking) hair. Products? Vitamin supplements? Anything!

Thanks in advance! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The ONLY way I get volume is by wet setting--twist-out or twist-n-curl. I fluff the hair at the roots, and every now and then I stretch the roots with a blow dryer.

I've read on nc.com that people using clips (like duckbill to clip hair while it dries). One thing I've read is to take care on placement so you don't snag your hair when taking them out.

Another thing I remember reading is applying your styling products upside down.

thanks Chrs - I've seen that on nc.com and I've tried the clipping but it didn't really work for me. I haven't tried applying products upside down though...I'll have to try that tomorrow.

I was reading a site yesterday, and they suggested applying products from the nape to the front will help with volume.

I get more volume from styling dry hair or hair that is 80%-90% dry

Same here tiashauntee, when I dry or damp style, my hair gets huge..wet styling actually makes "flat" when it dries...

Hmmm I may dry the dry/damp styling tip but when you do that how do you prevent frizz from setting in first?

You can plop until damp or put hair in twists or braids and air dry. Another option is to sit under a warm or cool hair dryer.

Good question......I guess it's all in the product you use, I don't recall having a problem with frizz. Maybe the volume hides the frizz.

Ok I will try the plopping til damp method. Thanks Chrs! Would you suggest I put my leave in in first & then apply styling products after the plop? Or wait til after to put in everything?

I was always chasing the ever elusive volume. I wear wash and gos, and it used to look completely flat. I now use one styling product and then air dry. It takes a few days to dry completely, but by then I have the volume I want.

Elasta QP Feels Like Silk...the 16 oz bottle is a different formulation than the 8 oz.

I would try it both ways. As long as your hair is damp, you should avoid frizz.
