Coconut oil
Hello Ladies,
I purchased some extra virgin coconut oil yesterday. Other than mixing it with my oils to seal with, what should I do with it? What are you using it for?
Thanks,
R

Re: Coconut oil
I use it to make eco custard. I also mix it with aloe vera gel and shea butter, use it to undo my twists...and put it on my feet. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I use it as a moisturizer after usign the black soap. I love the glow (not shine) it gives my skin. I steam it in.

I sometimes use the Nutiva Unrefined brand coconut oil or Black Jamaican castor oil before I apply my Hesh Amla, Hesh Brahmi or Maka powders for my weekly treatments. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Coconut oil
Renny,
Here's an idea. I haven't tried this recipe yet, but will when I head home soon (can't find jojoba oil here). http://www.diaryofahairobsession.com/?p=775
She calls it Shealoe Butter Mousse (which sounds and looks fantastic!), but there's more coconut oil in there than both shea butter and aloe combined. So I'd rename it Cocoshealoe ('coco-shay-low') Whip, or something like that [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Please let me know if you try it out, and any variations you make.

How long can you keep coconut oil? Does it have a long shelf life?

Re: Coconut oil
I scoop out what I'm going to use for the week into another smaller container and melt it using a double broiler if I need to liquefy it. I read somewhere that it can get rancid if you dip in the jar too much. I'm not sure if that's true, but I didn't want to risk it.
I love it. I use it for my body, face and hair. Been using it on my little one too. He was already soft, but now he's softer.

Re: Coconut oil
Thanks ladies for all the ideas. I plan to make the whipped shea butter recipe real soon.
Re: Coconut oil
I use the Whole Foods Market brand of Virgin Coconut oil after I shower, run Knot Today in my hair, rinse and apply Curly Custard. I've been happy with it so far and I've been doing it about 3 months. I've never used it for anything other than my hair but I think I'll try.
Re: Coconut oil
Lately I have been pouring it into a spray bottle with Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Fortifying Conditioner and water....it;s usually equal parts and enough for a week. I use it for twists. Sometimes I run some Giovanni Direct Leave-in through my hair first.

Re: Coconut oil
I add a dab to my henna paste after the dye has been released, I scoop half of the amount from the jar and place it in a separate container to use to moisturize my skin, feet and use a small dab to lock in the moisture for my hair. I also use it in my Taliah Waajid/Black Earth Products conditioner to use as a deep treatment/conditioning. I cook with it as well, I purchase it from the Indian Market in my area. I've never had a jar become rancid yet.

I never ran into a problem with it getting rancid and I was using it almost daily and dipping into it. I use it after I put Curly Custard (Kinky Curly Line) and recently been using it as a moisturizer on my body after a bath or shower.

Re: Coconut oil
I used coconut oil the first time I had ever attempted a wash n go..n my hair was terribly dry throughout the day, I dont think what i did before was right. This is the order of what I did.. i want suggestions before I try it again.
First I washed my hair with the SheaMoisture Curling Shampoo
Then put in the Curl Milk put then i rinsed it out ( think thats what i did wrong)
then I put coconut oil and aloe vera gel to seal the ends..right??
but other than that..i put coconut oil on my skin after i shower, and it leaves my skin really soft.

I use it after cowashing each morning. I moisturize with whatever shea butter product i have on hand and add coconut oil afterwards. Makes for soft and shiny hair which is great since random feel compelled to touch it lately.....lol!
