Shedding Empty Shedding

Post by Poundcake921 4th May 2010, 10:56 pm

I recently bought one of those hair catcher drains that you put in tubs...it works great but maybe a lil too great bc I see alot of hair (have lil spring curls) in it every time I shower.....I wash my hair once every wknd and I co-wash once in the middle of the week...the rest of the days...i just dampen my hair in the shower and use my spray mix and go.....

Is my hair shedding or is my hair breaking off? It's not clumps of hair by no means but it's enough to get me a lil worried...does anyone else experience this.....is this natural...or if you know how to minimize shedding if there is a way...please provide ure awesome tips...thank you!

You can tell by looking at the individual strand and if it has a white bulb on either tip, then it's a shed hair. The tip is where it connected to the hair follicle. If there is no white bulb on either tip, then it broke off from a point on the strand further down ... i.e. breakage.

It may ... the constant tension (the action of twisting the stands around your fingers tightly) could weaken the strands ... especially if your hair is either dry or overmoisturized

I think you can also tell by looking at the length of the hair thats coming out. if its the length of the rest of your hair: shed hair. if its shorter, to a lot shorter: breakage.

shed hairs are totally normal. I heard that on avg ppl shed about 100 hairs a day. and if you're not getting those out every day then whenever you wash there's probably a "back log" of shed hairs that need to come out.

The information from the ladies above is great! They are exactly right. I had the same experience after I bc'ed. I was twisting everynight. Now that my hair is longer I am wearing protective styles, flat two strand twist and/or two strand twist to limit manipulation.

Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/user/kimmaytube?blend=1&ob=4#p/u/11/y0933yP3Ey8

It has great information about shedding and/or breakage. Also, Kimmaytube has wonderful information about natural hair care in general. I love her channel!!
