Moisturizer questions
Hello everyone,
I have been working my hair regimen and I think I have a pretty good one BUT I'm missing a good moisturizer. I would like to use one right after I shampoo or co-wash and before I seal with shea butter. So I have 2 questions.
I think I'm in the type 4 family of textures. Any suggestions are welcome.

- Is shea butter enough of a moisturizer?
- Does anyone use a moisturizer I can get from beauty supply stores or whole foods?
I think I'm in the type 4 family of textures. Any suggestions are welcome.
Re: Moisturizer questions
I use Giovanni vitapro leave-in conditioner, then oil and then butter. I would suggest using a water based conditioner and then the shea butter for maximum moisture.
Re: Moisturizer questions
I use Kid's Organics Shea Butter Moisturizing Detangling Hair Lotion for my water-based moisturizer and Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey for my oil-based moisturizer/sealant. On days I want more hold, I'll put on Miss Jessie's Curly Buttercreme before the hair honey.

Re: Moisturizer questions
Shea butter isn't a moisturizer, it's more of a sealer.

Re: Moisturizer questions
I find my moisture spritz does the trick for me. I really haven't found a great moisturizer in the stores, but my hair loves my concoction of water, condish, sweet almond oil, veggie glycerin, castor oil, and lemongrass EO. Super soft hair all day long!

I have several that I alternate with, but I order all of mine.
My favorites are in the Curls and My Honey Child lines.

Exactly what I was going to say!
Moisturizers are typically water-based.
Re: Moisturizer questions
I look at Shea Butter as a moisturizer, and it's the only moisturizer that works for me. Those water-based ones are to light and don't penetrate my hair well enough.
Re: Moisturizer questions
Interesting, my hair has grown like crazy using ONLY shea butter, coconut oils, etc and conditioners. I wanted to try a moisturizer though because it seems like a lot of people use them. So, last night I went to Target and grabbed a moisturizer by Organics. It is water based, with no petro, mineral oil, etc. I tried it last night and would say that my hair looks nice, shiny and very moisturized. We'll see how it does.

There is a chance that if you only use a moisturizer that your hair will feel dry. You want to use the moisturizer and then seal in that moisture with Shea butter or some oils. The shea butter really just coats the shaft but doesn't penetrate. Coconut oil penetrates so I use that one when I do the Chicoro method of sealing.
So basically, if you choose to get a moisturizer don't for get to seal.
Re: Moisturizer questions
What was the name of the Organics product?
As for sealing, I typically seal the last third of my hair.

Ditto
Re: Moisturizer questions
Moisturizers you can get from the store I like and have used are HE HH and Aussie Moist. They do contain 'cones. I am not familiar with any without cones you can get from a drugstore.
Re: Moisturizer questions
I seal the my whole head b/c my roots actually tend to be the driest, so I have to make sure the moisture stays locked in there as well. It depends on what your hair needs are.

I use those conditioners but was looking strictly for a moisturizer. Thanks for that list!

Gotcha! Many of us use conditioners as our moisturizers.poeticlyspkng wrote:I use those conditioners but was looking strictly for a moisturizer. Thanks for that list!
Please let me know the name of the Organics product that was free from those things we try to stay away from. TIA
Re: Moisturizer questions
Hi have any of you ladies tried Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier. I think you can buy it from select CVS stores (the list of stores are on the website). It is supposed to be a daily moisturizer spray. Just wondering how it works before I go out and buy a bottle.
