CurlieCutes1121
Hi all my gorgeous fellow curlies! I'd thought I'd finally come out of hiding and introduced myself...
My name is Janay, and 22 years old. Brooklyn born, but southern raised (North Carolina girl). I'm finishing up my last semester undergrad, and hope to be teaching high school math next year. I recently got married November 21st of last year (hence the 1121 reference in my screen name) and couldn't be happier...
Ok, now onto my hairstory. I've been natural for most of my life. My mother was anti the kiddie perm, so I was not even given the option to relax until I was 15. well, by the time the option came around, I had just come back from a summer trip to NY, and EVERYONE was natural. Armed with more styling options, I decided to leave my kinks, coils, and curls alone. I say I've been natural "most" of my life because I have had a total of two texturizers, but I only count one of them. The first one I was, well, IMO deceived into. The hairdresser convinced both my dad and myself that the texturizer was a "conditioner" (I kid you not) that would make my hair easier to detangle. Well, imagine my surprise when that stuff began to burn my scalp!!! Besides the pain, I liked the effect, but was so scarred I waited two years before I did it again. After the second one, however, I vowed I would find another way to get the straight look, or just be curly forever. Then I bought I flat iron.....
and over-straightened!!!! After my wedding, I decided my poor tresses needed a break from the heat, and decided to go back to the curls. So for the last month, I've been trying to bring her back. I've had to cut out about 4 inches that would not revert, but I'm in love with my hair all over again. I may straighten again (someday), but for now, I'm loving where I'm at.
I must say, I'm so happy that there are a LOT more naturals now!!! Growing up where I am, I never saw another natural, so to see a sea of curls really makes me happy =)

Re: The Flexirod Adventures!
My version of a TnC:
I prepooed with olive oil and shea and washed my hair last night. I conditioned with Suave's vanilla floral, did an icy rinse, then twisted my hair in large sections with shea butter and Garnier Fruitise wet shine gel (I think?). I had about 10-12 twists in my hair when I was done. I then rolled my hair with some flexi rods and slept overnight.... took them out this morning and fluffed...I'm kinda feeling it....
Hopefully day 2 hair will work... I've got class tomorrow...

Thanks ladies!!! I hope it lasts with minimal manipulation so it doesn't frizz.... Otherwise, pony puff or fro-hawk it is....

Re: The Flexirod Adventures!
Great TnC! You can twist it with fewer twists before you go to bed and either sleep in satin bonnet or sleep on satin pillowcase. Looking good

Re: The Flexirod Adventures!
Happy Monday ladies!!! Well, the hair held up pretty well.... I pineappled it to keep from crushing my curls (I sleep a little wild at times) then put on my satin bonnet. Thanks for the suggestion of twisting it before bed. I may have to do that in order to stretch it for another day. I'm also contemplating the satin pillow case.... the bonnet is really crushing my newlywed sexy..... my hubby calls me mushroom head when I wear it (LOL.... I'll take it as a term of endearment)...
Off to my next class! Will post a pic later today!

Re: The Flexirod Adventures!
Your hair is gorgeous. Leave the curls alone..no need to flat iron with pretty hair like that.. I too understand the bonnet thing is so not sexy so I just bought a satin pillow case from Sally's yesterday. Your TNC is very pretty...

Re: The Flexirod Adventures!
Thanks Vonda!!!! I'm trying... and haven't once had the urge to flat iron....
LOL... ok, funny story:
Just started a new (and final!) semester of classes, and bumped into someone I had a class with last semester. Bless this poor girl's heart. She came up to me and said (and I quote) "Janay, I almost didn't recognize you--why are you wearing a wig over all that pretty hair?"--made me chuckle so bad! In between laughs, I managed to tell her that this was "all me." Then she asked permission to feel around for some curly tracks..... normally I wouldn't grant such, but since she asked....
Well, she was pleasantly surprised, and immediately began to ask millions of questions....
Does this happen often to you ladies?

LOL...no i haven't experienced that one...I don't have well defined curls. My hair is more on the nappy side, but your story is funny regardless. Some would have been offended, you handled that one like a champ..

Re: The Flexirod Adventures!
Good morning!!!
So I totally forgot to post of pic of 2nd day hair. I loved it because my curls weren't as tight, and it was so much fuller!!!! Soooo cute! BUT.... I also forgot to retwist, and 3rd day hair was a MESS!!! Tried to fro-hawk it with the 3 day TnC, but wasn't feeling it.... Not sure what I did wrong, but I'll try it again...
Co-washed this morning with my Suave, then sealed with a bit of olive oil. Was going for my WnG fro-hawk, but that wasn't working for me either. So I banana clipped the front, and just started pinning the back up towards the top of my head as well to disguise the banana clip. I've dubbed it the carrot top (LOL)..... It kinda looks like a mini-fro hawk, but not really.... I've got a latin ballroom class as well as a salsa class today, so no hair in the face was working for me...
I took pics before I left home, I promise to upload!!!
