Baggying, Bunning, and Sleeping Empty Baggying, Bunning, and Sleeping

Post by Ambitious_Tiff 19th March 2011, 2:26 am

Hey y'all. I have been trying to do some research on the baggy method. I have been noticing a little breakage and a few splits so I want to fix this quick. I want to try baggying but I am not exactly sure how this is supposed to work. I get that you're supposed to add water or a leave in and then seal with an oil or butter. Is this in addition to what you've already done earlier in the day to style your hair?? Also are you supposed to only do the ends or whatever you can fit into a ponytail (like from the ponytail holder to the ends)? I am thinking it would make the most sense to do the hair from the ponytail holder up and just kinda either bobby pin the baggy down or tuck it under the ponytail holder, maybe? Also is it best to use a humectant or something containing a humectant for the sealing when baggying or does it make a difference? Do I need to wait until after I have gotten a trim to do this? Also how do y'all make sure your baggy doesn't come off at night and create a mess in your bed?

I have just a few questions on bunning too. I am going to try and use this as my go to protective style since I can do it pretty quickly and I can sleep without fear of messing them up. I just wanted to know how often do you redo your buns and what do you use for hold? I don't want to really have to rewash my hair every other day or every two days. I am currently using gel but my hair itches like crazy on day two. I really appreciate y'all's input! TIA!

I don't baggy on styled hair, to me, baggying is how I deep contion my hair. Either on dry or wet hair , I'll apply a moiturizing spritz/lotion( little condiioner, aloe vera juice, tea, rose water, veg. glycerin) then I apply straight conditoner on top of that (you can add honey to up the humectancy) , then on top of l'll add a butter/oil mix. So basically I get my hair soaking wet, then put on a shower cap or tie a plastic shopping bag over my hair, then tie a scarf around the perimeter of my head to keep the bag from moving. Also I trie to patthe baggy to expel the buid up air/steam in the bag. The heat from your head with the liquids in your hair will create low-key steam, and I like t pat at my head to keep the steam moving.

On styled hair I would spray the hair, especially the part from the ponytil holder down (extra attention to your ends) with the spritz I mentioned above, then seal lightly with with a butter and top it of with a plastic bag and scarf. Then you can add a hat and have your hair conditioned as you go about with your day, and when you take it down, your hair will already be styled.

At night I apply a leave in, which is usually hello hydration(yes the conditioner) and seal with shea butter, coconut oil or olive oil. this is done to my ends at night and twist it and wrap a scarf around my head.

Or, when My hair is already moisturized, I DO NOT take down my bun. I do the same routine and place a sandwich bag on my bun after I applied the leave in and oil heavily.

In the a.m, I take the bag off. my hair would be soak and wet, so to keep it that way, I do what I call a 'Puff Bun'. It's just a regular puff with the ends tucked in.

And as far as the gel, check out the eco custard video on youtube or you can do a search on CN. This gel is similar to KCCC and it does not flake or itch if used properly. In addition to that, apply castor oil to your edges before the gel to protect your edges, they will still lay down.

Also if you exercise its a lot easier to baggy if your cowashing after a work out.
Hope this helps.

I agree with Lysheba, baggying is how I deep condition.

I baggy overnight with conditioner and oil, then I rinse in the morning and wash as I'd do regularly.

I do my whole head (like deepconditioning) in four sections and then I bantu knot in each section.

I dont get my hair soaken wet when baggying because I found when I wake up the conditioner is enough to keep it moisturized and have my hair feeling SUPER soft. its kind of like deepconditioning on dry hair for me. I also do it this way because I baggy overnight and I dont see the point in sleeping with wet hair and have it dripping everywhere

to make sure it doesnt come off while i sleep I put the shower cap on and then I tie it down with a scarf and put a bonnet on top of that.

I'm transitioning so when I bun I keep my hair in a bun for about 4-5 days. I use shea butter and a scarf to tie it down. I dont like to use the gel I have because It doesnt make my buns look the way I like them.

the way I bun is a little different (i think) right after washing I moisturize and seal and then I lightly blow dry on cool air. after each section is blow dryed i do a braid out for about 3 hours or so and then i lightly comb that out and do a big/full high bun.

i bun this way because i'm transitioning but I like my hair to be thick so on day one & two my hair is still pretty thick and then on day three it starts to look smaller so by day four or five its just a regular bun not too full and then I do the process over.

I also 'baggy' to deep condition overnight. And I also do my whole head and do it on dry hair.

I've been using Qhemet's AOHC only. It's full of oil so I don't feel the need to seal, also, my hair's going to be wrapped up so doesn't that kinda 'seal' it anyway? Anywho, I soak my hair in it (more than I would put on in the daytime) and put on a plastic cap and wear my usual sleeping satin scarf on top of that and go to bed.
In the morning, my hair is very soft, but a little greasy and I rinse my hair in the shower or wash it with very diluted shampoo (depending on how greasy).
I'm transitioning with my hair in twists or braids, so my method is exactly the same for styled hair. In fact, I don't think I've ever baggyed on loose hair. Hmmm...

Anyway, I think maybe I should start adding a bit of water to my hair before putting on the AOHC since water is lower down on its ingredient list. The method would probably work better with the BRBC which has water listed first, but I only have a small jar of that and I'm saving it!

Yeah, so that's me. Probably hasn't helped you a jot!

If you baggy overnight can you go out with the conditioner in your hair? or will it make it crunchy?
As a college student I don't have time to rinse it out since I have early classes so can I just 'go' with the condtioner still in?

I'd say so, if you don't put too much in. I've never had crunchy hair with anything from QB and if I'm putting stuff in overnight, I only use things that are meant to be left in (no wash out conditioners). I never know when I'm going to have another depressive episode and not be able to get out of bed, and don't want to end up bald! Razz
