Over Thirty & Living Life as a Curly
Sometimes, I wonder if certain styles should only be worn for younger curlies. I wear cornrows, twists and ponytails.
Are there certain styles you think are inappropriate for anyone over 30 years old? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Thanks ladies! Sometimes I wonder if my styles are not "age-appropriate." I will rock what feels comfortable to me.

I have not seen hers but I want to try mini cornrows. Check out this YT video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5GkifN-4eI
I also want to try mini individual braids like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrjc1DNA6Eg&feature=related
Re: Over Thirty & Living Life as a Curly
Exactly! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] i would do the cornrows only the front and leave the back free.
i like the individual braids, but i definitely dont have the energy to do it myself.

Love your curls!
I think for the most part you can wear whatever you want. I work from home so I can do whatever I want with my hair. There are occasional meetings in the office, adn I notice I tend to tone down my "wildside" on those days. For instance I may try a frohawk or afro to go to a club/lounge but probably wouldn't if I were goign to the office or church. I guess it's just a matter of where you are going wiht the hairstyle and what you are there for.
Re: Over Thirty & Living Life as a Curly
I agree with the other ladies. Do what feels and looks good. When I was about to graduate from grad school I went to the hairdresser not knowing what kind of style I wanted until I saw a little girl get flat twists going up into a curly pony tail and it looked sooo cute! So I told the lady that's what I wanted. At first she referred to it as a little girl's hairstyle but I told her I wanted it anyway so she did it. I really liked it and so did everyone else
Re: Over Thirty & Living Life as a Curly
whatever your style is, rock it - like clothing, it's about confidence and feeling good in your own skin and knowing what works for you. but if the style is working you, rather than the other way around, it's probably not a good fit IMHO.

My husband and I were just talking about hairstyles, he told me instead of doing the BC I should just wear Cornrows. Im 30 and I was thinking I was too old to be wearing a style my 12 yr old wears!! Hmmm maybe Im not.

Maybe I need to rethink this as well, because that's how I feel most of the time. But I do know I couldn't wear them at work. It would have to be on the weekend unless I only did them up to my crown and had the rest in twists, or out. Hmm...

See Im with you Wizard Wheezer, some styles just dont fit my personality or my age group I think. I guess in the world of natural hair I can get away with it [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] !!

Re: Over Thirty & Living Life as a Curly
Before I went natural i would wear cornrows to work - i found a braiding place and told them specifically that I wanted it to not look like extensions...they had to start with my natural(permed) hair then gradually add the extensions...it came out really good.
during week I would pull it tight with a flower and on casual fridays i would wear it loose

That sounds like a good idea gradually putting extensions in the hair!! hmm do you think that would work with Microbraids??

I can bring myself to wear Bantu knots outside the house and as an adult, I've never worn cornrows...Just not my style.

Well Im 40 years old and have been rocking two strand twists now off and on since my hair has grown out some. I finally got the nerve to wear them outside the house since Thanksgiving and I have gotten so many compliments from people.

Re: Over Thirty & Living Life as a Curly
I think the issue of inappropriate is a personal question that each of us have to ask ourselves. Just because I might not wear it doesn't mean the next sister shouldn't. And if you are comfortable wearing it then like the other sisters said, "Rock IT"...but the key is to be comfortable with it.
I've always wanted big hair and I was jealous of the naturals who inspired me. Recently, I finally did it. I started with a conditioner only that was pulled and wore it out. I was so scared that I looked a mess. But after my make up, earrings and clothes were done I have to admit that I was HOT!!!! Next, I did big hair with a twist out and again I loved it. I'm twisting my hair now to take down on Saturday for a Christmas party...yes I will be rocking big hair.
I will say that as much as I loved those styles there are times when I won't wear them as I don't think they're appropriate for ME and certain settings. No different than wearing tennis shoes to a black tie event.

@ shycurl I just dont about microbraids...i just don't know...ive never had micros...i do think they can be done real well tho.
@ sisterboyd...you are absolutely right. everyone is just so different so whats appropiate for one is different for everyone else.

Re: Over Thirty & Living Life as a Curly
I wear cornrows often. I have even done the beads. I always get positive feedback. When I first wore my bantu knot out (well my second attempt) I thought it was too curly. But I have to say that the compliments were absolutely coming my way. Most important do what feels comfortable, because if you do not own it, it will reflect in ones approach toward you.
