Natural/or good hair salons in New Jersey
Okay, so here is my thing. I have been transtioning since August of 09 and before I made the decision to go natural I had microbraids/sewn in in my hair for a few months, took them out and got my last perm (I know I lost about 3 months of new growth!!!urghhhh). But anyway I cannot remember the last time I had a good cut/trim mainly because I don't have a stylist and I dont trust just anyone to cut my hair..
Since I am on this journey I figured what better way to start(even though its been 3-4 months) than to get a nice cut and make everything even and start off fresh. Currently my hair is just about hitting my chin, but I want it cut to right below my hairs because I know that my ends are very damaged and since I am slowly cutting my permed ends off anyway why not??..
Anywhoo does anyone know of a good salon that will be able to focus on my journey and my hair and also give me a great cut in the Union Essex county NJ area??
Anybody heard anything about shear-insanity in East Orange? I hear they focus on hair (not a completely natural salon) and even give everyone a free consultation on your first visit...www.shear-insanity.com

Re: Natural/or good hair salons in New Jersey
hey, there! i am not familiar with the tri-state area, but judging by their website i would stay away from them. i am saying this because none of their models are natural. also, they say that they specialize in relaxers, weaves, etc. i think its better that you go to an establishment whose website shows that they do take care of natural hair by showing naturals and explaining what type of natural hair care they specialize in. HTH!

Thanks dajewel!!! I completely agree and this was a salon that was referred by someone who is natural but she just gets it blown and curled there... I want a place where they focus on natural hair and can understand what I am trying to do... Thanks and I will keep searching...

I was looking for a salon in NJ too. And I came across this famous women that has done Jada Pinkett's hair. I called her and ask her to do my transitioning her. She said she does not work with transitioned hair and referred me to someone else. But I will definitely be trying her when I am ready.

I have heard of her as well...A lot of natural hair salons I am calling have said that also that they do not do much work on transtitioning hair, but will give u a style.( I guess this is the time we really get to know our hair to prepare for being COMPLETELY natural) I mean I dotn mind doing things myself but figured if someone could help every once in a while that would be nice...lol), butI did come acorss one salon who I called and she was EXTREMELY helpful and was willing to answer any questions I had and also said I could send her some photos of my hair so she can sort of get a feel for it...Its called Kukaberry's

But I will let you know if I decide to go toeither one of the places or even find another one and how they did..

Re: Natural/or good hair salons in New Jersey
Your are so welcomed. And yes I do believe this journey is a time for finding out about your own hair and it's needs. I personally believe that the natural hair shops are suffering even though everyone seems to be going natural. Because people are fed up of perms and the time in the salons and the money being spent to maintain the straightness. So as people leave the creamy crack, they are taking their hair into their own hands by research and experimentation with the occassional visit to the salon.
I know I am...lol...and I am sooo happ about that [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I've been to shear insanity once before -- last year actually. I don't remember seeing any naturals in there but they did hook up my short hair.
I'm looking for some good salons that specialize in natural hair too. I'm going to need one for trims, etc. I'm also in NJ, so if I come across or hear about one, I'll be sure to pass it on

Hi, Did you try to make and an appointment with the lady at kukaberrys? I too was also looking for a place in NJ (or should I say another place) Anyhow I saw your post with the link to kukaberrys and I did give her a call. She was extremely nice over the phone and I also sent her a picture. I have spoken with her a couple or maybe even a few times I still have not been able to get to the appointment part.. I am just concerned because some of my experiences with Natural hair care specialists have been a little strange! I would appreciate your input if you have any to offer. Thanks! -S-

Re: Natural/or good hair salons in New Jersey
I havent yet made an appointment with her either, but she was extremely helpful. I think Im gonna hold off on seeing anyone about my hair until I get a little bit further on my journey. I am just going to take this time to really learn about my hair, what it likes and dislikes, etc. I hear a lot about good natural hair salons in new york but there aren't too many in New Jersey that I have heard of.
Thanks for sharing and commenting and I will definitely keep updating thispost if and when I go to a natural hair care salon in New Jersey.

My friend went to her a couple of times a few years ago and had good experiences...she only stopped going at the time because of cost and finaces, but she had nothing but positive things to say.
Re: Natural/or good hair salons in New Jersey
Hi Ladies - I saw your post & had to chime in =) (well sign up )
*sorry 4 the length*
I did find, thru a natural friend of mine, a lady in Plainfield by the name of Sandee. I don't know the name of her shop but its located at the corner of central ave & 2nd st her # is 908-757-0111. She's very reasonably priced. When I told her that I'm transitioning & she told me straight up, "you have to go thru the ugly to get ur hair where u want it to be". [she's VERY upfront & honest] She said that she'll keep rollersetting it until it won't anymore. During my 1st visit, she was hoping that she wouldn't have to use the blow dryer to straighten my roots, thankfully she didn't (talk about we were both happy). But ladies, when she's done my hair looks like I got a fresh relaxer (was 12 or 14 wks post @ the time, currently 19). Once she's done she 'greases' ur scalp (its shea butter, idian hemp something from the bss & i'm sure some EOs - but that's optional) She does let u know in advance that you'll need to keep coming so she can get to know ur hair. She is the only person that works in her shop, but I usually go after work so it works out for me.
Gonna give her a call also!!! Close to me...IM ALL LATE...lol
There's also Salon Femi (39 glenwood rd Montclair) 973-783-7999. They specialize in healthy hair care (it says it on the window). There is one natural stylist but @ my consultation she suggested very limited styles for transitioning hair (i'm 19 wks post) She does straw sets but I wasn't thrilled about getting that style at the time. They were on the pricey end @ least for my budget..

I look forward to see you all and if you have any questions, email me at info@nedjetti.com [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
ps. Be CAREFUL & leary about straightening your natural hair with the hot comb, it CAN alter your natural curls permanently like a relaxer and the only way to remove the straight ends is by cutting them. It's best to get transtional hairstyles that do not require the usage of heat, anyone else telling you different probably isn't a natural haircare specialist of 18 years, I see the straight ends not curling back from the hot comb all the time...
peace nluv...

Q, thanks to your post I also stopped by the salon in Plainfield and got my hair done by Sandee (908) 757-0111. She was very honest and helpful and her prices are REALLY reasonable. I’ve been natural for a while now but just haven’t explored and other hair styles outside of micro braids and kinky twist. She gave me a trim and twisted my hair into an updo. I'm defiantly going back probably sometime next week. Shes my new “go to” hair dresser …. If you guys stop by her shop tell her Carol sent you

How was she with the trim? Did she only trim? I am need of a bad trim, but am nervous to do it myself and even more nervous to go to someone. Is she moderately priced??

I do not know where you are in Jersey but I went to Meko Herbal Hair Spa in Irvington, NJ. Her number is 646-234-8310. Professional and comforatable enviornment. By appointment only and one client at a time. She uses all natural products. She listens to your needs and offers suggestions. She did my BC and she was a swwetheart making sure I was ready. She does your trim on dry hair. It matters to some people. hth.

That definitely helped and Irvington isn't too far for me!!! I will definitely give her a call also. I am just looking for a good trim, but when I did my BC myself. Because of the lengths of new growth I had all over was uneven, I unintentionally cut my hair into layers which I dont mind, but now I need someone to trim my hair in layers...
Thanks for the info!!!!
