Growth :(
I have been natural for officially 5 months and I am no where near the length I should have initially in August I started off simply big chopping and I had a small fade, then it grew to about two inches or so in September until I realized my big chop was uneven and in need of shaping, my barber then cut me down to about an inch and a half of hair, it's now December and I have maybe 3 inches of hair so if I do the math right seeing as I started in September with the fresh chop with an inch and a half, 3 months later I should have 3 inches of new growth, what I don't understand is once I got that second chop isn't the hair supposed to grow faster because I no long had split ends and it was all even? I'm so sick of my length of hair sigh.
Re: Growth :(
Hey Neenee.
I know that can be frustrating. But now, our hair grows about 6 inches per year. so you may be rushing it a bit. I wish we did grow an inch a month!!! LOL Give it some time. I know the ladies on here will tell you to make sure you moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!!! that is probably key for us. what do you use in your hair???

actually your growth sounds about right..u BC in September and it is now 3 months later..hair grows 1/2 inch per months soo 3 inches sounds about right..
but i know how it feels to want length..especially when you come online and see naturals with gorgeous big hair that reaches their bra!! I know the feeling..but now i just focus on loving my hair at the length it is now and not concentrating on length..

Actually if it's 1/2 an inch per month it would only be 1.5 inches total in 3 months. but still, just be patient. you know everyone's hair is different and grows at different rates. but @ rayray, i feel you on seeing these chicks w/hair to their bra strap. Mine is past my collar bone and i'm still envious of them!!! LOL so i guess we all need to deal with and accept what we have!
@ neenee, maybe you can join one/some of the hair challenges on here. one i'm doing is the castor oil challenge. i'll start it when i get my castor oil i ordered online at vitacost.com. it's supposed to help with hair growth. there's another challenge called something like 3 inches or more in 6 months. hope this helps!

1. The 1/2 inch per month is an average, that means that some could have less, some could have more. Also hair growth is cyclical so you will experience a phase in which new hair is coming in and old hair is shedding. What you do to the ends of your hair does not affect what happens under your scalp. If it did we wouldn't know that people had split ends because they would be bald:-)
2. What are you doing to retain the length of the your hair?
misskris's suggestion regarding challenges can help you develop consistency in applying products but you should also need to evaluate your tools and techniques. Please don't let comparisons discourage you.

Re: Growth :(
I agree with Falcontress about the comparisons. I admit i would love to have hair as long as MopTopmaven or Tiashauntee. But my hair is my hair and I can't compare it to theirs. It has to do what it's gonna do. But yeah, Falcon's suggestions are good as well. Also, are you using stuff that has mineral oil in it?? A lot of people swear AGAINST that stuff because it can clog your pores which I would imagine would hinder growth. Look at the ingredient labels of your products. I have stopped using stuff with MO in it.
Re: Growth :(
ok.....if what i'm getting from this post if right, is that natural hair only grows 6 inches per year??? that's crazzzzyyyyy ... everybody's hair is not the same, but my hair is like it has a mind of it's own; like one minute, it's trying to grow, the next minute, it's like do i have to grow?? i understand where ur frustrations are coming from b/c ur not the only one; natural hair can be frustrating, but that's what extensions and wigs are for lol @curlyneenee~

Re: Growth :(
No...Indidiiamond....that's just what they say the AVERAGE is, 6 inches a year. Of course some may grow only 2 or 3 inches a year, some maybe 9 or more....who knows!!! And of course I don't know who "they" is LOL and I don't know who "they" studied. Probably 'another' population. LOL But even so, you're right. everyone's hair will grow when and the way it wants to. I guess our job is to just work with it and help it out.
Re: Growth :(
Everyone thank u so much for the feedback I really do need patience though I just see those great big fros and massive puffs and think y can't I get that but honestly I need to not compare my growth with others and I deep condition about 3x a week I dnt really use shampoo and protein treatment once a week I always seal when I moisturize my regimen is ablout on point I just need to be patient also considering hair is only supposed to grow about half an inch a month
Re: Growth :(
yep! I know it sucks trying to be patient. I have to be too. My hair is just below colloar length wich is ok. But I am aiming to get my hair back thick again the way it's always been. Recentlt it started shedding so I am trying to bring it back. Like they say, "patience is a virtue." I guess that applies to everything!! LOL

Your regimen sounds ok. Perhaps there are some things you can tweak.
3 sessions(even when using a deep conditioner) could be more manipulation than your ends can tolerate at this time. What products are you using, how are you drying & styling your hair?

Re: Growth :(
I dry it with cotton t-shirt no real manipulation to my hair maybe comb it out or so I use Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioner Carefree Curl Gold and Vitamin E oil as of right now I change moisturizers time to time though I usually use the Cantu Shea Butter Leave In followed by a Care Free Curl Gold moisturizer and then seal with oil that's it
Re: Growth :(
I don't have a sit under dryer though I deep condition with a cap and toss a scarf on it
Re: Growth :(
Gurl, one day you're going to be in the mirror and say "where did all this hair come from. It going to seem like overnight it grew.
I realize my hair grows the most in the spring. In another year I will be asking you what season does you hair grow the most.

Re: Growth :(
it's something about that care free curl stuff i don't like the sound of. my mom uses it on her hair but she doesn't have the chemical in it. but she used it on my girls once and I didn't like the way it made their hair feel. Like the stuff was just sitting on their hair and had a weird residue-y feel to it. Does that have mineral oil in it???
